Default Albacore Fishing!

Are there any charter or guide boats around here that fish for albacore with rod and reel? Every place I call, runs boat lines and might drag one feather on a rod and reel, but don't even slow down for you to land it.

I am used to (and enjoy) trolling with rod and reel for a jig strike or multiple jig strike, then dropping back iron, plastics, or bait for more hookups. Does anyone fish albacore that way in Oregon? Or is it all hand lines?

Hand lining is fun, and gets the fish in the box, but rod and reel is more fun.

The only charter I know of that may come close is the Irish out of South Beach Marina in Newport. This boat is a six pack and I'm told they try some different tactics.

good luck,

Gregg

Threemuch: Try the "Irish" out of Newport Marina 541.867.4470. They troll with 60 pound-class rods, but a few years back they let me cast lures on the stops and I scored a couple on Krocodile.

Although I scarcely have the boat for it (15 footer), I sure as heck don't troll hand lines. I troll 15 pound line, and keep a 12 pound outfit ready to cast a lure with. Handlining is peculiar to Oregon. Throughout the rest of the Pacific, albacore are recognized as great game fish and are pursued with rods and reels that let them show their stuff.
