Default Tuna Water?

How many miles out is the good tuna water? I talked to a doryman last night that told me they were 30 miles off last week. I'm waiting for 20 miles or less.

Pilar what port were you fishing out of?
I may have to add a tuna trip or two to my B-10 vacation. With no sturg and only 6 fish per 7 consecutive days there will be be some DOWN TIME!!!!

Hello Fishplay. We launched at Depoe Bay. You can print out this graphic and plot an approximate position with a straight edge.
http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/PSB/EPS/SS...washngtn.c.gif

This graphic is updated periodically and is how we figured it out. We went due west from Depoe Bay and found a temperature break at 26 and 41 miles. From 58 to 61 degrees. Plot an approximate position and check that area for the temperature change. The line ran North - South last Saturday. The graphic clearly showed these lines. Also there is a low cloud bank along the 41 mile line. You can see this from 15 miles away. The fleet was working along that line and that is where we got all of our fish.

Try to plan your trip on open water to include returning with the wind and swell. You get a better ride that way and you can tolerate more wind if you get caught by the afternoon blow. This time of year the wind is from the NW and the swell from the same place. We typically launch at Newport and head NW into it towards N125 W45. The temperature change is where we fish and we never make it to N125 W45.

So I just checked that out and there are two spots of interest. The warm water 59 - 60 extends to the coast north of Tillamook. The change to 62 is at N124 50' W45 30' and at N124 35' W45 30'. You could launch at Newport and go NW as described above.

Thanks Pilar,
I'll monitor that site and the thermacline and when it moves closer we'll plan a trip.
Are you done for the year? If you go again let me know and maybe we'll tag along.
I'm going to install the new long block in my boat in the morning. Hope the third time is a charm...as they say!
Greg
