Default Ilwaco Jetty Fishing

When I was a kid we fished the north jetty for silvers, but that is only a faint memory. I hear passing reference to doing just that by some of you here on Ifish. Tell me what you use, all the tricks, lures, tackle. Spare no details --- plizz!

Hey Thumper....I was doewn in Ilwaco weekend before last. They were catching co-ho with the good old bobber and mooching set up. The best fishing seemed to be incoming and high slack....Personally I tryed for abit but I was using anchovies me and my Father had bought for sturgeon fishing which for inexplicable *elderly* reasons we didnt do. The method they were using was pretty basic, bobber 3-6 feet above an anchovie thats head up on a mooching rig. Of course there is also a pretty heavy weight in beteen the bait and bobber. Good luck and tight lines.

I was born in Ilwaco and have fished there regularly since. I still have a beach house in Seaview less than four miles from the north jetty. The last great years happened about a dozen years ago. Even my 6 year old grandson caught his first coho then. My gosh he's eighteen years old now... Anyway, back to fishing. Most peole use anchovies, the fressher the better. We used to be able to buy live anchovies off the bait dock at Ilwaco. That was the best. Just rig them up on a mooching rig under a slip bobber. Usually the length of the mooching rig and up to 12 - 15 feet. Fishing more shallow would also produce but the gulls und sea birds would get to your bait at times. Fishing a little deeper also gave you a better chance at chinooks. I would just use a 2 ounce crescent sinker below a "beer can float. I think the largest balsa "thill" float would work great. Don't worry about going all the way ot to the end of the jetty. Most of the fish we caught were 1/4 - 1/2 mile out from Wai-ki-ki beach. Yes that's the name of the beach at Fort canby.
