Default Re: Downriggers & Sturgeon???

Proud TJ Driver,
Several years ago I tried this for a short time with some success. What I did was rig my rod as usual but instead of a heavy lead I used about four ounces. I cast that out into the hole then clipped my line to a release that was attached to the down rigger ball via a two foot cord (this allows you to see the bite). Then I would lower the downrigger to about 5 feet from the bottom figuring the light lead to carry the bait the short distance left to get down. Did not want my rigger weights laying on the bottom could be disasterous if it should hang up. This worked to get away from heavy lead weight in a deep hole. But I hated sitting there listening to my down rigger cables "whine" in the current and the added hassle of using the down riggers.
I decided it was better to pick fising holes and times during hard run off where I could get by with as light a lead as possible.
Hope this is of some help!!! Jim
