I would say cougar or bear. Did you see any tracks?

no there were no visible tracks, it has waist high grass along the back of the arena and a row of fir trees about ten feet apart and 30 to 45 feet tall. there is how ever a distinct trail going thru the grass and works its way up the tree line approx 150 feet to the neighbors property.

It sounds like a cat, I know that they bury their kill. Usually if you find an animal partially buried a cats working the area. I dont know if bears do that, I've only heard about cougars doing it. Looks for tracks around it and that would tell you what it is.

Re: mountian lion or coyote
Is the site covered up like a house cat covers his scat?. leaves, brush.. etc.
Coyote will not bury the kill.
You have a Trail cam?, Or know someone that does. Good spot to hang one..
look for tracks, in area. Find soft dirt, creeks, trails etc.
sounds like cougar.

Sounds like a mountain lion. Was it a full grown deer or a fawn?

Sounds like a cougar, if you have a tag and some patience you should set up somewhere in view with a rifle and wait. If you need a volenteer then PM me.

Re: mountian lion or coyote
Cougar will eat the organs with the highest blood content. Liver, heart ect. Then it will eat the rest in the next few days. Sit about 75-100 yds. downwind of buried carcass. Make sure your rifle is sighted in and have patience.

Re: mountian lion or coyote
I would guess cougar. There has been a cat sighted several times at Black Forest Archery 3-D just of Drift Creek Road. Keep an eye on your horses.

It sounds like this gentleman has horses Salmo, and I believe he has a legitimate concern, and his question is legit as well.
You never have anything positive to ad to any post, just a sour, negative attitude toward everyone who mentions anything about a cougar or wolf.

Re: mountian lion or coyote
IF your not a hunter & wish for that cougar to be shot & Removed from area. You have Many Cougar hunters, on IFISH that will be more then happy to Kill it for you. With legal means, either bow, Or rifle.
The way it's buired the Deer. It will return to feed, you now have a good bait pile for cougar. Tis will be one of the best spots to kill a Problem Cougar.
Keep & eye on the horses, they will be spooky & act weird. When the cat is in area. IF you have kids, Give them a heads up on what to do & NOT to do with a cougars.
Keep a Shooter handy. YOU WILL SEE THIS CAT AGAIN!!!... Go buy a Cougar Tag & hunting lic. NOW.

If it was half buried, it's a cougar.

Re: mountian lion or coyote
Another way to tell is to skin the kill out. If it's chomped on all over the place, including bites tot he face, yote. If it has a couple of very obvious kill marks, then cleanly eaten on, kitty. Huge bite marks to the interior thigh (rear legs), probably wolf. Severe spinal trauma, probably bear.
If it's very fresh and a cat is eating on it, probably cat. If you walk by and get attacked by a bear, probably a bear.
