Things that I wonder--
What does "O.K." stand for?
Why don't they give smaller amounts out for lottery winnings? Like SEVERAL one million prizes, rather than only ONE big one?
What do convection ovens do, and if you have one, do you like it?
Do you like flat top cook stoves?
What do you wonder lately?

One big one sells more tickets than a bunch of little ones
Convection ovens blow the hot air around so they cook faster, and its a good option. We installed one over ten years ago and now seldom use it. It can save you an hour or so with a turkey, but we are still learning to use it in standard oven mode.
Our gas range is flat and I am thinking any other shape would make scrambling egg kinda tough to do, since if the fry pan isn't flat the eggs would spill.
I am wondering if Rev has settled down.

Re: Things that I wonder--
What is the origin of the word 'OK'?
edited to original "askOxford.com copyright:
There have been numerous attempts to explain the emergence of this curious colloquial expression, which seems to have swept into popular use in the US during the mid-19th century. Most of them are undoubtedly pure speculation. It does not seem at all likely, from the linguistic and historical evidence, that it derives from the Scots expression 'och aye', the Greek ola kala ('it is good'), the Choctaw Indian oke or okeh ('it is so'), the French aux Cayes ('from Cayes', a port in Haiti with a reputation for good rum) or au quai ('to the quay', as supposedly used by French-speaking dockers), or the initials of a railway freight agent called Obediah Kelly who is said to have written them on lading documents he had checked.
The oldest written references to 'OK' result from its adoption as a slogan by the Democratic party during the American Presidential election of 1840. Their candidate, President Martin Van Buren, was nicknamed 'Old Kinderhook' (after his birthplace in New York State), and his supporters formed the 'OK Club'.
This undoubtedly helped to popularize the term (though it did not get President Van Buren re-elected!). During the late 1830s there had been a brief but widespread craze in the US for humorous misspellings, and the form orl korrekt which was among them could explain the initials 'OK'. Such a theory has been supported by more than one distinguished American scholar, and is given in many dictionaries, including Oxford dictionaries.
The only other theory with at least a degree of plausibility is that the term originated among Black slaves of West African origin, and represents a word meaning 'all right, yes indeed' in various West African languages. Unfortunately, historical evidence enabling the origin of this expression to be finally and firmly established may be hard to unearth.

Re: Things that I wonder--
Mom has a convection feature in her oven. Basically it just blows hot air. Not sure what the consensus is whether it is any good or not. Seems like she only uses it when she does multiple pizzas at the same time. Or maybe that is when it screws things up, can't quite remember now http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convection_oven
I wonder if I will ever get the roof done. Stupid building supply place

Canadian oil? Canola oil comes from rapeseed which is in the mustard family. I think Canada started a marketing program to promote the oil.
How about Hot Water Heater? Why heat water if it is already hot?
I wonder what the winning lottery numbers will be...

I don't like the flat top stoves. I like the instant temp control of a gas stove.
a convection oven works by convecting the heat around. Its the opposite of concaving.
I wonder if money makes you crazy......

Flat stoves work fine if you have flat pots and pans. Most fry pans warp and then they don't work well with flat top stoves. I buy the pots and pans with the sandwiched bottoms because they are unlikely to warp.

I wonder:
1. What my dog dreams about when she's barking, whining and kicking her legs when she's sleeping.
2. Why we can put a man on the moon and people in space, but can't build a car that lasts much more than 100K miles.
3. If the fish I hooked really bit my offering or was flossed.

Re: Things that I wonder--
Flat top stoves clean up so easy. I'm willing to live with thermal inefficiencies just for the sake of a clean cook top.
Imagine a magnet. Half is Red "+", the other half "-". Continuously break the magnet in half produces smaller magnets. Can this be continued to a single atom? What happens when you split the atom?
Is the Earth and our moon merely subatomic particles in an even larger particle?
Will I hook up tomorrow and break this 6 day dry streak?
Does Chartruce trigger anger response in fish or is there another factor at work?

Re: Things that I wonder--
for all of your inquiring minds
************************************************** *******
In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either
sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing
behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and
both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to
be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are "limbs,"
therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression :
"Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg."
************************************************** *******
As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and
October)! Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because
of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs mad e from
wool. They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put
the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes The heat would make the wig big
and fluffy, hence the term "big wig." Today we often use the term "here comes
the Big Wig" because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy.
************************************************** *******
In the late 1700s, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair.
Commonly, a long wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining.
The "head of the household" always sat in the chair while everyone else ate
sitting on the floor Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be
invited to sit in this chair during a meal. To sit in the chair meant you were
important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the chair the "chair
man." Today in business, we use the expression or title "Chairman" or "Chairman
of the Board."
************************************************** ************************
Personal hygiene left much room for improvement. As a result, many women and men had developed
acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee's wax over their facial skin
to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a
woman began to stare at another woman's face she was told, "mind your own bee's
wax." Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term "crack a
smile" In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt . .
. therefore, the expression "losing face."
************************************************** **********
Ladies wore corsets, which would lace up in the front. A proper and dignified
woman, as in "straight laced". . . wore a tightly tied lace.
************************************************** ******************************
***************************
Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied
when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the "Ace of Spades." To
avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead.
Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid
or dumb because they weren't "playing with a full deck."
*************************************
Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people
considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV's or radios, the
politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. They were
told to "go sip some ale" and listen to people's conversations and political
concerns. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. "You go sip here"
and "You go sip there." The two words "go sip" were eventually combined when
referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term "gossip."
************************************************** ************************
At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and quart-sized
containers. A bar maid's job was to keep an eye on the customers and keep the
drinks coming. She had to pay close attention and remember who was drinking in "pints" and who was drinking in "quarts," hence the term
"minding your "P's and Q's "
************************************************** ************************
One more: bet you didn't know this!
In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron
cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a
good supply near the cannon. However, how to prevent them from rolling about the
deck? The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid with one ball
on top, resting on four resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply
of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon.
There was only one problem...how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding or
rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a "Monkey"
with 16 round indentations.
However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to
it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make "Brass Monkeys." Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster
than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the
brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannonballs would come
right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, "Cold enough to freeze the
balls off a brass monkey." (All this time, you thought that was an improper
expression, didn't you.)
I didn't see anyone asking about these wonders of the universe
Myles

That's a pretty easy one... Competition. Human nature. And it seems to only be getting worse these days as the "me first" attitude seems to prevail.

I wonder why my husband is horrified by the prospect of getting blood drawn at the doctors, but he can put a suture-requiring gash on himself in the garage and not even realize it until I ask where all the blood came from?

Re: Things that I wonder--
I wonder where all the tires go ,we buy new ones wear them out so where does the rubber go.
I have always wondered this since I was a kid and have never got a good answer for it.

Re: Things that I wonder--
A lot of the new "Astroturf" fields are made from recycled tires, as well as flooring and I even noticed the rear tire on our brush hog was made from recycled tire pieces.

Re: Things that I wonder--
100,000 miles of road in Oregon, assume 3 million tires worn out per year with 5 pounds of tread gone.
That would be 1/4 ounce per year per foot of shoulder on average. Just a light dusting, if it doesn't blow away or wash into the waterways. Alot more worn out road surface accumulates than that, you won't even notice the rubber.

If a bear took a dump in the woods and no body saw it, does that mean it actually happened?

I wonder how Jennie's surgery went/is going...
and now I'm wondering not WHEN my CPA will return my calls, but IF.
I also wonder why cars have stupid check engine lights. Why doesn't it just display the error code so you can just look up the code?

Just wondering if you took the wings off of a fly, would you then call it a walk?

You cant use a canner on a flat stop stove at least not ours, the big burner shuts off an on automatically when it is on high so the water will never boil.

Re: Things that I wonder--
I wonder why a 34 year old girl, with cervical cancer, has surgery and everything removed. The doctor says they, "would bet their license" the cancer is gone. The decide to do radiation anyway, just to be sure. They use an extremely high dose (according to the doctor and radiologist). So high in fact, that now, they are giving her less than a 25% chance of surviving the damage done from the radiation, and the imminent surgery she is facing. I don't get it?????????

2. If a tree falls in the woods and noboby is around, does it make noise.
3. If you are traveling at the speed of light and turn your headlights on, where will they be.
4. If goofy is a dog and mickey is a mouse, then what is pluto.

Ya I love the passing lane coming and go to the coast. 50mph till you get to the passing lane then it's 70. Why is that??
