OTC Results Garibaldi
The final leg of the OTC was nothing less than a smashing success! The ocean was beautiful and fish were biting! Over 200 fish donated! And another $5,700 in cash given back from tournament winners which buys over 30,000 lbs of food!
The Rogue, Old Mill, Ducks Unlimited and The Tillamook Bay Boat House are the folks that worked their butts off to make this such a super weekend, can't say enough about them or the rest of our sponsors!
Vickie and Victoria ran the weigh-in like seasoned champs! These gals worked very hard and without them we would have been in big trouble!! Thanks again ladies for all the effort!!
The results:
1. Team G-Loomis..............134 lbs
2. Team Tuna Time............132 lbs
3. Team Roadbuilder...........123 lbs
Both G-Loomis and Tuna Time donated back their winnings! Treb on Second Season won the drawing for his entry fee and donated that back as well!
The trip to Cabo went to: Rip-n-Lips
Team EFISHINSEA won the Pelagic Pot for a Blue Fin Tuna! Not a huge fish but a dandy just the same! Congrats to Todd and his crew!
Team Tuna Time won the Big Fish Pot...well done, Dick!
The OTC can't say thank you enough to all the teams that participated in any or all of the tournaments! You made this a success!
A special thank you to Del Stephens! He has taken our little tourney and made it something far bigger than any of us thought it could be 3 years ago! Del and his wife have given countless hours, unknown amounts of cash and put their hearts into making these tuna tourneys and the Food Bank the big winners! Mike Jespersen, Bob Stacklie, Roger Cook, John Stansfield and Kristi Johnson also deserve a big THANK YOU for their effort all year long...you guys ROCK!!

Excellent job by those doing the heavy lifting!
I'm amazed at all the excellent prizes donated by sponsors and the real winner is the food bank. Way to go.

I stopped by the boat house just after you guys had all finished weighing in and the boys were wore out. In fact, I stopped by Sunday again and they were still cleaning tuna. Good job guys and hats off for the donations.

This is the leader board that matters most!
Seriously though, Agreat big round of applause for Bud Hosner, and Dick Crosley, for making the Garibaldi event very special. And a Standing ovation for Del and Weddy Stevens for the year round hard work, which funded this series.

Seeing how the G-Loomis guys adopted Garibaldi as their home port early in the season, it was a Garibaldi Sweep! And Team Grady White has yet another strong showing!
Bob, enjoy your 7th place finish...you did well!

Did they give you a new tuna rod to say that Bud? Saw some GLOOMIS hosers off the CR Saturday just pounding the coho left and right. Fun to watch for a few minutes until the same thing started happening to us. Fish after fish after fish.............
Good job GLOOMIS crew whomever you are.

Bob, you need a new health care provider - or you need to buy your nurse some more flowers. My nurse doesn't bring me vitamin enriched regularity supplement, rather something between 130 and 80 proof and from either Kentucky, Russia, or Mexico depending on the affliction.

Re: OTC Results Garibaldi
another fantastic time! Thanks very much to all who gave of there time and effort to make it such a success, again! you guys ALL ROCK!
We managed a few fish and lost more than a few that would have put us on the board and raised our standings. Oh well, that's just fishing. It's all good
How about that ocean!! Ya gotta love coming home with gentle swell to your back doing 30 knots. Just sweet!
There's always next year and team Wy's Guy is looking forward to
a better showing then.
It's been a terrific year, and I hope to make another trip or too before calling it quits.

To set the record straight there Bobby Boy, Team G Loomis is NOT made up of professional fisherman. The G Loomis Grady is owned by a non-G Loomis skipper named Gary. Greg from G Loomis is also NOT a pro fisherman, but a bean counter (No offense Greg!) Dave from G Loomis is a Pro, but not a tuna pro.....just some small poison water tourney pro. The last member of the team, Steve, is the long distance casting champion of the world.....but no means a tuna pro.
Gary and Greg are great tuna fisherman with a passion just like the rest of us. Dave is hooked as well, and it was his skill with butterfly jigs that put them over the top on Saturday. I don't know Steve, but I think his credentials speak for themselves.
Point being...... Team G Loomis had a plan, acted on the plan, and came through because like the rest of us, they have improved their skills to a point that day in and day out they produce.
Tuna Time makes beef jerky....
A big thanks again to everyone that turned out. I had a great time and I know everyone else did as well.

And how many tons of Tuna has Dick sold this year?

The prosecution rests your honor!
Bobby Boy did ok against that level of competition.

Re: OTC Results Garibaldi
Team Striper aboard the Sales Call had an amazing time in the tourney. New boat, new captain, new crew, one Tuna Virgin, and only one guy who really knew what he was doing (San Anita out of Newport). Hell, we even gutted our fish, somehow we though we were supposed too. That's my fault for not knowing the rules.
What's the average sack of guts weigh? Can someone hang a rack on their fish scale and help me out, so I can feel better about our 99# weigh in.
I really appreciate the work that the OTC crew did. I've run a charity event for 10 years, and it's a heck of an effort to cover all the bases. I really enjoyed meeting some the of people I've been reading about. Even the Beer Wagon Beaver, that stubby little fella was actually pretty amusing. I smell a side bet though, the Civil War Side Bet. I'll have Dave in an Duck Shirt if I have to drive to the 126° to win it.
Count Team Striper in for all three next season. We're hooked, but this time not gutted.

Re: OTC Results Garibaldi
The fact that Team Odin placed in the top 10 speaks for itself. It's amazing that we remember gear, ice, lures, crew, and how to steer a boat, never mind that we somehow keep the lines untangled long enough for fish to accidentally jump in the boat when we are napping. Thanks goes to TR-1 for keeping the course, and to the wives for keeping us fed.

No Bernie - team iFish only had three fish on board and didn't feel it necessary to try and beat ourselves to death trying to make it back by 4pm to compete for nothing.

Re: OTC Results Garibaldi
21st spot aint bad either for a perfesser, an engineer, and a corporate writer and tuna virgin at that. Had a wonderful day with Roger on his boat, the Triple C.
What an awesome day from the shotgun start to a great day on the ocean, to an delicious meal. Seeing those flares go up and 50 or so boats racing off to the West was a sight to see.
Nice to meet some fellow i-fishers, and I'm already looking forward to next year. to all of you, Roger included, who put so much work into making this event a successful one.

Bud,
Team G Loomis is honored to be a part of the Garibaldi fleet. The hospitality and friendship that you and Dick have shown has been greatly appreciated. Mike, Sorry.....but we do not know Depoe yet.
The real winner in this is the Food Bank. A big round of APPLAUSE and THANK YOU to all of the volunteers that have made this event possible. Your dedication and giving is truly appreciated!
Thank you!

Thank you!!!!!!
Not only did you show us how it's supposed to be done on the fishing grounds, but also as good citizens, when you donated the first prize back to the Oregon Food Bank.
Again Thank YOU!

Dan- You can take that green shirt, shine it up real nice, turn it sideways and stick in in your exhaust pipe!
126 line is where you belong too. No one goes that far, so your chances of banging another boat will be limited...
Get that pig of yours a salt water slip so we can have some fun!
A huge thanks to G Loomis and Tuna Time for donating their winnings back!

3 20lb tuna equals 60 lbs.
60 lb in the whole yields 30 lbs of loins.
30 lbs of loins make at least 60 meal portions.
60 more people have another nutritious meal.
It is totally an acceptable position to choose not to weigh your fish, but since you asked the question, that would be my rationale for weighing even 1 fish at an OTC event.

Re: OTC Results Garibaldi
Everyone who participated in this event is a winner in my book. You took the time to come out and fish in support of the Oregon Food Bank and you all put more into this than you took home. This shows the whole community that we are more than just a bunch of sports fishermen and women. Thanks to all the folks that help set up and tear down at each event. Thanks again to the folks that did the fish weigh in. We can all take pride in our contributions to these tournaments and the worthwhile causes they support. I look forward to working and fishing with you all again next year. Thanks for being patient with us (the OTC) as we continue to learn from our experiences and try to bring you a better and bigger tournament each year. Hats off the Rogue for their huge contribtuion to this years tournaments. They supported each Captains meeting and every BBQ. Let the folks at the Roque know how much we appreciated their contribution when ever you stop in for a beer or food. Thanks to all our other sponsors out there who supported us with both cash and products. See ya all next year...........Roger Cook

I thought part of the reason we were only weighing in 5 fish was because the food bank would rather have the money rather than spend it canning tuna. If you don't have 5 tuna to weigh it makes more sense to keep the tuna and let the food bank keep the money they would have spent on your tuna.

Re: OTC Results Garibaldi
Well Dave, I am working on the slip with Val & Jeff. I ordered a bow thruster for my pig on Monday morning, damn, word travels fast around here. Take me to the 126 Dave, just don't use me on your 130's for really big bait.
Dont Ask, Don't Tell Dave. Your exhaust fetish doesn't bother me, you did say you were raised in Corvallis, and I am on the Nurture side of Nature V Nurture. Go Ducks!
Where do I sign up for next year??

126 line is where you belong too. No one goes that far, so your chances of banging another boat will be limited...
Get that pig of yours a salt water slip so we can have some fun!
A huge thanks to G Loomis and Tuna Time for donating their winnings back!

The Food Bank is excited and happy to have anything that the OTC can provide. They really love to have as much of the canned tuna that we provide as it is a high nutrition/high quality food item. It is way above the norm as far as food quality goes.
The decision to limit the amount of donated fish to 5 per team was due to a number of things:
1. Cost of canning- With 5 per team we self-regulated how much we would spend on canning. We have cost allowances in the budget to accept 5 fish for every team. With a "most fish" we could easily have been overwhelmed if a wide open bite happened and every team brought 20 fish to the dock.
2. Logistics- 5 fish per team can be offloaded, checked in, and stored in about 4-5 totes.
3. Leveling of playing field- The 5 fish levels the field for small boat and large boat alike. While the majority of teams that caught larger numbers of fish did in fact finish towards the top, some teams with lower totals ended up quite well Odin.
4. Canning will take place for Garibaldi, but Hammond and Newport will accept the fish in the whole for carking and distribution. There is no cost to the OTC for distribution or carking. We will work to see if we are able to come up with a similar situation for Garibaldi next year as that both provides benefit, and frees up funds for donation.
Any individual or team that participates in the OTC is a winner! Donation of fish is not required, and certainly if a team chooses not with to weigh in/donate they don't have to. We as the OTC would like to see each team that participated weigh in fish, but nobody is going to point a finger and say what they should or shouldn't do. As I mentioned, simply participating is great. The question was asked "why bother" and the answer is that our preference is that every team that participates does so fully.

Re: OTC Results Garibaldi
For me, as the OTC is a tournament of sorts, as well as a benefit for the OFB, if the tourney remained a "most fish" tourney, I likely would not have participated. I can realistically only hold 35-40 TUNA! at the very max on my boat. I know there are a lot of boats out there that can hold 100 or more. So a "most fish" tourney is really not in the cards for me. I was very happy to see the OTC go to a 5 fish competition. I think you'll see more boats participating this way in the long run.

It is by far a better way all around. Many people commented on how much they liked the changed format. We will keep working on changes such as this to improve the tourney each year.

Re: OTC Results Garibaldi
In the words of the immortal Ricky Bobby, "If you aint first, your last!" So the way I see, it, we were tied for 2nd with 45 other boats.
Easy for me to say, because we posted a goose egg. We weren't blanked, but we weren't far from it. We decided to send the fish packing back to Chicago with our out of town ringer, my little brother. He looked pretty hungry, so we opted to give the fish to the hungry person we know, rather than the hungry person we don't.
I used to think I was a pretty good fisherman, but three days of fishing have taught me that I couldn't catch my butt with both hands during an OTC day. Yowch. I think my two toughest days of fishing have been the little Italy OTC 2006 and 2007, and Astoria 2007 is a close 3rd.
It's a great event. Well done to all. See you next year.

Re: OTC Results Garibaldi
I wanted very badly to be a part of the Garibaldi OTC but finances only allowed me to fish the 1st 2 legs in Depoe & Astoria
This winter I am putting $ into a special savings account so that I can sign up for all 3 events next year
It was very rewarding to me to know that I as a man with meager income was able to help others in more need than myself but disappointing at the same time that I could not do more
Had I not bought a kill bag from Bud in Astoria I could have fished Garibaldi but it was my choice to risk not fishing for that bag
( I counted my chickens before the eggs hatched and only 1/2 actually hatched) No one to blame but myself
To those of you put this on and to those who participated my hat is off to you all
SEE YA NEXT YEAR

Re: OTC Results Garibaldi
Heh Threemuch don't feel bad that was the worst day on the water all summer for me...
12 great trips for tuna this summer and we just couldn't get it going. I guess I was due for one of those days just wish it hadn't been last saturday.
Humbling as it was it was still great to be with everyone on the water.

Re: OTC Results Garibaldi
sorry Hank, I had a last minute cancellation and you would have been welcomed to join my crew. We weighed 3 fish, lost another 7-8, and landed one blue shark. Still an improvement for us over our lame showing last year.
I too think I'm a decent fisherman but have also had my butt handed to me again this year.
We opted to donate our fish. All of us still have tuna either canned or in the freezer, so it was not hard to do the right thing regardless. I also did like the new format also, kudos to all who realized this was the best way to make it possible for anyone to win.
Great time out there, I especially loved the shotgun start. Great stuff!

Re: OTC Results Garibaldi
I found this last OTC leg to be very humbling also. Onboard the Dance Floor has been unbelievable all season. So last Sat. was a litlle of a let down. We only had 3 fish to show for our efforts. We fished every last minute we could trying to get our 5. We missed the cutoof time by a few minutes so weighin was closed.
In retrospect I have always believed I learn more from things that don't go perfectly then those that do.
I will be back from next year. Kudos to all those that put this together. It is a very good feeling to participate.
