Murphy Strikes again!
Took the boat in yesterday, as the low drive lube alarm was going off when we too the boat out on Thursday. I figured (as did my buddy at the local Merc shop) that it would probably be just a reseal, and that would be the end of it.......
Well, come to find out that the lower unit may be trashed:shocked:, and the entire drive may need replacing (saltwater intrusion).....
More on Monday.......

Re: Murphy Strikes again!
sorry to hear your drive is pau. I had to reseal my drive last year. Man, those parts are expensive. Hopefully you will be able to pick up a used one at a reasonable cost.

Re: Murphy Strikes again!
Hope you'rs is only an outdrive. My issue started with sucked valves and ended up being a total repower including a new Merc Bravo 3 outdrive.Only ran $25000.00. But I got a new boat--oh well it's only money.

Re: Murphy Strikes again!
The engine seems to run just fine- the drive lube alarm was going off intermittently, but we made it around and back to the harbbor just fine.
When I go to the shop, the tech pulled the props off and showed me that there was about 1" of fore and aft play in the front propshaft:frown:
So, I'm waiting for their diagnosis........

Re: Murphy Strikes again!
Ugh!!!! Sorry about your boat. If they didn't break all the time they wouldn't call them boats.
Hopefully it only costs a couple of boat bucks and you can get it fixed before the season is over.

Re: Murphy Strikes again!
That sure sucks. Sounds like the story of my life. If it werent for bad luck I'de have no luck at all... If you get really desperate you can borrow my 16' for some Point Defiance salmon action. I dont have downriggers but if you mooch... Boat is old as the hills but has caught a lot of fish. I'm moving this weekend and as soon as settled in I had planned on greasing bearings and give motor a tune up. After that you can borrow if needed.

Re: Murphy Strikes again!
Jim, I might just take you up on that!
Update- doesn't look good. I stopped by the shop today- the gimbal bearing needs replacing, as do the flappers. The drain plug magnets have metal shards on them. The shop is going to do an internal inspection in the next few days, so I'm down for the long weekend.
In a way, it's a blessing, as I just became a grandpa tonight!
More later....

Sorry to hear of the problems with the drive, but on a more positive note;
Congrats on becoming a Grandpa!
I hope the new mom and baby are both doing well.

Re: Murphy Strikes again!
Just realized that I never finished the "rest of the story on this adventure.....
The boat is repaired! The total damages were $6,200 parts and labor- a complete rebuild.
My insurance paid all but the deductible.
It's mid season, but all the same, make sure your policy cover you for what you think it does!
