Tuna Rumor?
I have heard second hand that there are tuna being caught 24 miles out of Newport. Anybody have any info they are willing to share?

Re: Tuna Rumor?
If I remeber right we had 55 degree water within two miles today so it wouldn't suprise me if we had 60 at 24. Man I wish I would thought of that today, had lots of time to kill after 9am Joe

Re: Tuna Rumor?
Somewhere on the net there is apparently a chart showing current ocean temperatures. I am searching but have not found it yet. Does anyone have the link?

Accuweather
Put in your zip code, and click on the Marine tab.... You will see a general west coast map. You can also select a Northwest map on the bar.

Re: Tuna Rumor?
I'd love to Mr. F but I'll be up in Astoria for my next days off. I'd sure love to get out and do a little 'core fishing this year though. Maybe if you guys head out sometime this year you would be gracious enough to let some tuna rookies follow you out... Joe

Re: Tuna Rumor?
I've never been albacore fishing before but have been thinking about it for the last few years, and if they come in close enough this year I'd like to give it a try. I'm looking for a few tips to help find them and how to catch them. I have a 20' sled and can't spend too much time looking for fish due to fuel capacity and need for a smooth ocean. Do you just go by temp. and when it hits over 60.0 just throw out your stuff and start trolling, and what would the stuff be that you're throwing out be? Please help a rookie.

Re: Tuna Rumor?
Count me in, I've never felt the urge to hurl at sea. Now where can I find a big boat in a hurry? One with lots of free board, plenty of range, and the HP to get there and back in a hurry. Does anybody know if the Garibaldi or Newport Marinas rent anything bigger than those 14 foot aluminum watering troughs with 15 hp motors? I might need a tuna first mate, a captain wouldnt be to bad to find also. How big of pole do you use Pilar?? I will need one of them also with matching reel, And a hall pass from momma would be nice if I dont want to sleep in the smoke house for a week. This is getting to hard.... Maybe I will just mow the lawn and drive down to Freddies and get some Bumble Bee tuna

Re: Tuna Rumor?
Most Recient SST (Sea Surface Temperatures)
Most Current SST
If I am doing the math right that means there are SST of 60.8 degrees F not too far from shore. This is the most recent info I have baan able to find.
Check it yourself.
I will post more info as I am able to obtain it.
Mr. F. out....

Re: Tuna Rumor?
Ok! Don't bother looking for the red and white SevenStrand feather jigs at OC Fishermans, I bought all of them.
Rumor confirmation Part I ..... Da Da Di Da Da Da Da ......
Tradewinds charters, Newport reports driving to 50 miles out and bagging 47 fish.
Charter in Depoe Bay is reporting fish at 40 miles. They are not fishing yet but hope to start soon.
Puffin thinks it's too early, he's never fished in July before.
The best I can do is make an attempt on Charlie Tuna on Saturday. I still have to bolt on the extra fuel cell. I'll have a first hand report sometime after that, Poseidon willing. If not we'll do the rockpile for lurkers on Saturday or maybe the sparkplug on Sunday and Monday with a few friends looking for the shiny ones.
I studied the surface temp maps and have some approx. GPS points. There is a box shape of 61 degree water between 44 40', 44 70', 124 25', 125 10'. One other spot is at 45 15', 124 15'. The second spot is about 61 degrees as well. This is less than the 62 to 65 I look for but these maps are a crude approximation and show relative better than absolute. This appears to be about 30 miles out. The edge of the warm current at 63 degrees is well out past 50 miles. This is what the charter boat was working.
Nice Ocean, lay down girl, it'll only hurt for a minute.

Re: Tuna Rumor?
It's no joke! Two heavy coolers in my garage say so. The fish were due west of Depoe Bay, at 26 miles, 60 degree water and at W125, N45 about 42 miles out. See 'Dolphin Safe Tuna'.
