The recent post by C & E is an excellent reference for all salty boaters to review. I'm not looking for a discussion here this is just a place to pin this reference. Discuss it in the original thread.

What you have to remember is that you really cannot afford to crash into another boat offshore. And I really don't want to worry about anyone that is close enough to me to crash into me. To a lesser degree there is some of this going on at boatramps too. Big boats don't stop or turn very well in the harbor between docks and with the wind as a factor. Give all other boats a wide berth, please.
It's a big ocean and there is room for everyone. It makes sense to be 10 feet from the boat next to you in a hogline. You won't get 30 times that far from me while I am TUNA! trolling before I start expounding out loud on your questionable heritage and the unmarried status of your parents.
Boats that are dragging gear are difficult to maneouver without tangling gear in the prop. Crashing and sinking a boat means a short, cold swim and then lawyers, courts and maybe even jail.
Think about it.
