Default Charter out of IIwaco

Taking the family for a week down in Long Beach. Was thinking of doing a salmon charter out of Ilwaco while down there. Is one charter better than others or are they pretty close to the same. There would be four of us . My wife and I and my two daughters age 10 and 15. What would you suggest taking for seasickness. I think I would be ok but they may need something. Suggestions? Thanks

Sockeye, you guys should pretty much put a hurting on the fish no matter what charter you take out, but I'll find you some numbers and post them. When you call, ask the person answering the phone generally about what time the boat has been limiting out. It's usually been well before lunch.

For seasickness, DRAMIMINE is the ticket.

Now let me find you some numbers...

As a former lifeguard in much fairer seas, I can tell you that dramamine is not effective on everyone, especially children. For some persons, nothing works. The best insurance available against 'family chum teams' is a call or trip to the Dr. and a round of prescriptions for patches that are applied behind the ears...

They must go on hours before hitting the water or they are useless (have halibut trip with girlfiend experience three years ago that proved that!...heave ho!)

The patches are called "Transderm Scop". And even the patches don't work for everyone. For best results, apply the patch the night before going to sleep, just don't forget it's there by taking a shower and washing it away.

Have a nice trip,

I have nothing but absolute respect for coho charters.There captains are great.I go sturgeon fishing with them when,I'm down there as I don't like hauling my boat down there for one day of fishing then all the way home again.You know leave the driveing to them besides they know where the fish are !!.Also I've been known to get seasick once in awhile,I started takeing ginger a few days before going out and that seems to work fine,I know it helped my in-laws on our last trip to Sitka Ak. the weather was bad and so was the water,I mean it was ugly.I still don't think we had any business out there.But no one got sick !!!

My wife and I have found the transderm scop patches to work well. Better than Dramamine. It did't make us as drowsey either.

I agree, Coho Charters is the best and most courteous to the sport boaters and Clients. The captains are very good too. Forget Sea Breeze Charters. Idiots behind the wheel last year just about ran me over. I had to take evasive action to avoid a collision. My intent was to pass him port to port. He just kept going like he was going right in front of me. As other boats attested I had the right of way and the clear path. He had nothing on his starboard side at all. A real river jerk.

Sea sickness, well I have found that Bonine works very very well. Those that do what I say on my boat do not get sick. Take one the night before you hit the sack. Then take one as soon as you get up before eating. This is important! You will not get sick.

Unfortunately, this last Sunday my passengers did not listen to me ( including my own dear father ) and they barfed 3 times a piece to the point that they settled for a quick limit of Coho instead of continueing to target Chinook. After the experience they both promised to take Bonine. Bonine does not make you sleepy at all. One passenger pulled a dummy and took two dramamine just before we left the dock. He was the first to hurl.

Good luck with your fishing family.

I'll second the vote for Coho Charters. Butch Smith is the owner and in my opinion the best sturgeon fisherman in the world. They have competent captains and good deck hands and you are pretty much guaranteed a quick limit of silvers and a comfortable trip. I tried the Bonine last weekend, but forgot to take one before I went to bed the night before and got a little nautious. Dramamine works good - one at night and one the morning of your trip but it will make you tired.

Some things work for some and not for others. Here's some TS patch info, http://members.home.net/services/tscopPPI.htm

...and you can order online..for a few extra bucks http://www.rxpalace.com/products_transderm_scop.htm

We've used the patch a couple times when we had been "wandering around town" the night before too much. They work good for longer trips in heavy water too.

I have a dumb question....if you go to Ilwaco and fish the Ocean, do you need a Washington license, or is my Oregon one O.K? I know it works for the river. Coho Charters would be my choice too.

Pirate, you'll need a WA license. You launched out of WA so you'll need the WA license, besides, it's still the state's waters so far out to sea.

GO NOW BECAUSE IT'S STILL SUPER HOT FISHING OUT THERE!!!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to setup a Westport charter for this coming Tuesday. Interested parties, send me an email, where you'll find in my signature. The complete deal with a derby ticket included is $80.20 (total price). The price is broken down like this:

$59.50 - trip
$ 7.00 - bait
$ 8.00 - rod and reel,tackle rental

If they have the seats, it'll be through Westport Charters.

That license thing has got me bothered. I guess if you fish on the Columbia, you can posses either Wa or Or. Sturgeon trips out of Illwaco it is not a problem. (This is not the case with Idaho). But is it the rule in the ocean to be licensed for the port you departed from?

I fished on Pacific Salmon Charters on
Wed. and Thur. We limited out at 08:45
on Wed and 11:30 on Thursday. The
captain said 5 more minutes when I
switched baits and put my anchovie out
20 pulls instead of the 35 pulls.
(mini diver) I turned around to say
something to my buddy when the rod
started smoking. Strong 19 pound
Chinook! Sure love the ocean. No puker
here!
