We started out Saturday excited to be out on the water again; it had been a couple of weeks since we missed last weekend to stay in town and move. Dad (hookup1) and i had always wanted to go out and check out St.Georges' Lighthouse about 13 miles south of Brookings, so we began our journey headed away from the tuna grounds we had been fishing this year but with the warm water so vastly spread out we figured we still had a chance down there as well as any where from about 13 miles and out. We traveled down to the lighthouse which was worth the time used to get there, its pretty awesome seeing that way out there.
After enjoying the scenery for a few we began our trip back north. The water was already 61 degrees so we put out the lures; you never know till you try right?
heres dad on the hunt
After about half an hour or so we decided to get going. We needed to get further north find that blue water that we dream about at night now after going tuna fishing it has a way of taking over your every thought!!
The seas and the weather was prefect. Smooth and flat sunny and warm.
We were getting up there to the spots that we catch em' every other time so we put back in and trolled and trolled and trolled.........
Then finally! FISH ON!!! then another A DOUBLE!!! not our first but we hadn't successfully brought in a double so here we go. I grabbed the first poll and got it all set up started to reel and dad maned the other. As he grabbed the poll and went to tighten the drag i hear him start saying that we have a problem I don't know if he accidentally hit the drag the other way or what but he had the most out of control birds nest i have seen in a while so i handed the poll to Charlene and went to help out dad. normally I can get out the birds nest but this one was here to stay; dad grabbed another poll and began to bring it in to get it out of the way when the line on it wound it self around it around it self creating another mess so while I'm bringing in the tuna on the mono hand line he is trying to clear the other line from the other side of the boat i had told Charlene to let me know when she had her tuna in close to the boat. Now with fishing line scattered all over the deck she states that her fish is right here so dad takes over on our fancy custom handline and i lean over the boat and get ready to bring the first tuna onto the boat!! As the fish gets to the surface i think it's a bit big and didn't want to loose it by ripping the hook out of its mouth so i call for the gaff. I get the gaff strike the fish on the side of the head and drag it aboard but its not time to celebrate yet; theres still the other fish dad is still pulling in so i head back to him and take back over. The fish finally gets close enough to see and its a decent size as well but me being wrapped in 200' of fishing line and the tuna on the ground tieing itself up with the line spread all over the deck it wasn't easy to maneuver around the boat. The fish comes to the surface and dives under the boat, then toward the back right under the outdrive. "DAD SHUT IT DOWN!!!" Luckily the fish didn't get to tangled around the prop, dad lifted the outdrive i leaned way over the back and tried to get the line free. It wasn't going very well with fish pulling the line the other way so i decided that we weren't loosing this fish he had been a pain so far so he was definitely coming aboard!!! i reached the line outside of the outdrive took a good hold of the leader and pulled the fish up and on the boat. THANK GOD!!! now that the fight is over we can begin to make heads or tails of the mess upon the deck of the Hook~up.
Charlene with one of the exciting catch
after all this we got put back together and got the lines back out. a while passed and i got one on. it was on the cedar plug which was set up on our smallest set up so the fight was awesome!! but as i got it to the boat we began to pull it aboard and the hook came out and i watched my fish swim back down
We trolled for a while after that; saw a bunch of sharks and porposes.....this is a shot i got of one of them from the bow
Charlene decided to fall asleep on the engine housing and i started to nod off then i got up looked at dad and asked if he was ready to go. yep you guessed it he was just as tired as us so we pulled up and began our trip back to port.
all in all a good trip but hey out there tuna fishing was not to love so we had a good fun day
