Default Sandy - Fishing the Glacier Silt

Anyone want to share their thoughts, successes in fishing the Sandy when it is running with the glacier silt. That good ole chalky, "tennis court" green color. Tis the time of year.

I tried the river this morning till about 10:00 a.m. Could not tell if the river got more color as the morning progressed, or if the color just became more apparent as the dawn gave way to daylight.

Anyway, I started with black flies - Silver Hilton, Green Butt Skunk. Went to a bulkier profile. Then I switched to a bright red and yellow pattern (Skykomish Sunrise). I did get some bumps on that - felt like trout.

My approach next time will be to fish shallower water, perhaps as little as 3 feet - behind rocks, etc. Deeper pockets and slots where you can't see bottom for the color. Seems to me the steelhead would feel secure holding here and it would involve less effort. Or, do I stick to the 4-6 foot rolling/broken water that would be the norm. Do I fish the fly slower, dead drift or stick to the classic summertime swing. Or is it just a waste of time. Thoughts?
