Default Gold Beach Advice

I’m heading down to Gold Beach the first two weekends in August for a guided fishing trip with my father-in-law. We are going out with the guide on Sunday so I’ll have some free time to fish on Saturday. I’ve never fished in the bay in Gold Beach. Can you fish from the bank? (I don’t own a boat yet) What should I use? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can fish from the bank in Rogue Bay, but it's kind of an ugly situation. The spot to be in, is on the jetty, right where the bay narrows down from the south sandspit. People usually cast buzz bombs, brass spinners, etc. I say it's ugly, because you usually have an entire fleet of boats in that same narrow area, when the tide runs out. Tangled casts with trollers just makes it miserable. Snagging into the riprap even makes it worse. And honestly, bank success is very limited there. There is , however, usually some half pounder action, upstream near Lobster Creek by that time of year. Traditonal steelheading tactics and gear is used.

For my money, I'd stick to trolling the bay. Jots has rentals if you are boatless. They use sophisticated bait rigs, down there. But, quite frankly, I've done just as well pulling a #5 Gold Spinner w/ green beads. You will need to change weight from about 1.5 oz. to 3 oz. max depending on the tide height and run off. Just remember to fish the head of the tide in and back out again. Troll rather fast. You'll do fine!

P.S. The wind WILL be blowing.

I agree w/ Hogtide, the banks access is very poor.
I fished it last Thursday and will again this Wednesday, and probably once a week until mid Aug. Its a great place!
We hooked two, one on the first pass.. up high, and I proceeded to short stick it and knock it off w/ the net.. that was fun, about a 24-25# pig, I was sooo upset...
the second fish we hooked down below the bridge... had it right up to the boat after 5 good minutes and it cam unbuttoned.
We only saw about 20 fish landed, wasn't a great day... but the day before there was a 49+ pounder caught and weighed in at Jots
that will keep me coming back week after week.
I would rather go down there and have a shot at a 40+ pounder than fish on the big blue lake for 5# coho.
Who are you fishing w/??

I'll be fishing with a guide by the name of Bill Urie. I've used him several times when I've fished the upper Rogue. TH Thanks for the great looking Rods. I can't wait to catch a fish with them.
