Good luck, Crag would be the only place where you will find a sporting goods store and I don't remember one being there.

Almost any stream that the road crosses will have salmon and most have trout. I would try to take a 14' car top boat if you aren't planning on towing a boat. The ocean fishing around POW is fantastic.

The Forest Service has a good POW map.

Plaza Sports and Tongass Traiding/The Outfitter Bring your own KY or they charge you twice plus shipping

Murry Pacific is ok but they're commercial and salt water orientated.

There were no fly shops in Ketchikan as of 01/11/99 and not that much call for one.

You might contact The Fireweed Lodge (907-755-2930) in Klawock (by Crag) and see if they can help you. The Tackle Shack in Thorne Bay might also be helpful (907-828-3333)

Send me an email and I'll give you a phone number for a friend that might be able to help you out, he's a fly fishing preacher and his church is a block from the ferry terminal.

There is a great fly shop in Ketchikan cause I was just there 12-04. Those guys where very imfomative and friendly filled me with lots of info that I anked them specifically about fishing Prince of Wales Island and filled me with free cookies.

The had a 50% sale on some sage, orvis, rio, and sa products too. I actually bought soem cause the price was right.

You can additional talk to Don Greene at fishermans shack cause he was just up ther fishing with a friedn that runs a lodge on teh Island.

Must be new, on Tongass Av? Was Gary Souza part owner?

Uh.... Not arguing. I never said there wasn't a fly shoop and I dated my information (as it turned out misinformation). I lived in Ketchikan for 15 years and do know a bit about the town and SE Alaska.

Default Prince of Wales Island?

I am planning a trip to Alaska's Prince of Wales Island. I need some help in locating a Freshwater Guiding Service or a local sporting goods store somewhere on that island.

If anyone here has any advice on whoi I might contact regarding fishing on this island it would be appreciated.

Thanks,

i was just up there about three years ago for a week of fishing. we had a couple of friends up there, one lived in coffman cove and the other group goes up for a month at a time. but i agree you could fish just about every creek you wanted. you'll have a great time up there, and be ready to come home. you want peace and quiet and severe boredom go there, i don't think i could take it living like that but it sure sounded good. lots and lots of fish and BEARS too! we seen five of them while going to our fishing hole. don't worry though there only black bears. have a great time.

If you can make it to coffman cove, stop by the riggin shack ( coffmans coves only store ) and ask the lady behind the counter. Coffman cove also has a small RV park where you could camp/ and or ask some people staying there where they are going. Again almost every creek on that island has fish. There is a guy that rents boats there as well, great halibut fishing right out of the cove.

Log Cabin Sporting Goods in Craig is the largest & best stocked fishing equip store on POW, # is 907-826-2205. Pretty friendly group, willing to give out good info.

There is a fly shop here in Ketchikan, in the Sockeye Sam's building (907-225-3260), owner is pretty familiar with POW. Also Tongass Trading, 225-5101, but keep your wallet open in Tongass Trading.

Are you flying up or coming on the ferry? If you send me a PM with your address, I'l mail you a copy of the AK Dept of Fish & Game sportfishing brochure for POW, it has some pretty good info on run timing, etc. I think I have an extra copy of the Forest Service map too.

I live in Ketchikan but work a lot over on POW. If you fill me in on what you are considering (flying up or taking the ferry from Bellingham or Prince Rupert, chartering, float plane fly-outs, camping, lodges, bringing a boat or renting one) I could fill you in on what I've experienced. Here's a couple other web sites:
www.adfg.state.ak.us/
www.princeofwalescoc.org/
www.ketchikanchamber.com

Hope this helps, like I said if you shoot me some specific questions I'd be glad to pass on what I know.

Dan
