Default herring spin

i was wondering what spin you herring users prefer, clockwise or counter.never thought about it too much until i went fishing with a friend,he spun his clockwise and outfished me 3 to 1.both of us had a good tight roll on it but we cut our bait the opposite.scott

Scotty,
I usually use the Gilly miter box to cut plugs, which give them a clockwise spin when viewed from behind(fishes view). I have heard that a different rotation might make a substantial difference in hookups, so I am anxious to hear from others, too.

Reminds me of a story .... Friend was fishing and they had two in the boat and a another boat asks "How you doing?" He replies "we got two"

Next pass the boat asks again "anymore?"
My friend replies "Yup got another"

My friend pulls his boat up so the other boat can see the fish. The fella in the other boat asks "Whats the secret to your herring?"

Friend replies.."when going with the tide you cut it this direction and when going against the tide you cut it the other way".

Imagine the grin on the face of my friend as they changed herring in the other boat every time they changed direction.

Fishing fall chinook out of Tillamook I had a rookie with me who was out fishing me two to one until I noticed he was plug cutting the herring "backwards" ...I corrected him and now we have a similiar hook-up ratio I think there is something to a bait that is acting different from the other offerings and we mix it up from time to time ...

Reminds me of a toilet flushing. Northern hemisphere is counter and southern is clockwise. So does that mean when you troll over the equator your hookup ratio increases???

If you live right on the equator does water flush straight down without swirling? I'm going to be up all night now thinking about it.

Until a year ago I never realized there was a difference in spin direction. I have cut my herring to spin counterclockwise for decades and extremely good success, normally outfishing most other people. I still cut mine that way, although I now know most people fish theirs the opposite way. I believe the more important thing is the spin, and how the hooks are placed. I know those new barbless gamakatsus with the counterspin herring is an awesome combo for hookups. The Gilly cutter is quite similar to what I fish in reverse, although I may tend to use a little less angle from top to bottom giving the bait a little less roll, but it is a minor point.

Maybe....if you are trolling against the current, you should rig the bait up backwards. That way it would be a face to face challenge and taunt the salmon. " No Lil' anchovie is goin' to eyeball me, while backpeddlin'....GULP!"

...bet it would work

Here is a tip that'll help you out.

A fish's brain has 2 sides, much like animals and other living creatures. Fish tend to react to stimuli, wether that is scent, sight or hearing induced. With fish, it is the left side of the brain the controls their motor skills in swimming through the water. The left brain predominately necessitates the fish moving towards the right to time and catch their intended prey. In other words, fish naturally follow right directional movement patterns and position themselves to attack to the right. The right brain interprets what's happening around them.

So what really works to catch fish is a clockwise rotation. It naturally follows the fish's perdominate movement pattern making it easier for the fish to locate and grab your bait. A counter clockwise roll means fewer hookups and more misses. The rod goes down and comes up empty more often then not.

I like to stack the odds in my favor and always rig with a clockwise roll.

Ok, if you made it down this far and read the whole thing, congratulations. Since I've been feeding you a line of buuuuulllllll!!!

A little hook, line and sinker action!!

Maybe there is something to this, but I haven't a clue. I like what smilesforu wrote about his friend telling those guys on changing herring.

Now for what it's worth, I usually always have a clockwise spin, the bait is cut the same direction which spins clockwise.

no hard feelings,

Cap'n,

Friend 'o mine lovingly refers to a bait rigged with a RSK as a "Rotating Salmon Pastry"
I laughed my tail off the first time he said that....Pretty much standard now though.

Interesting underwater video and site for various rigging techniques, even though the meat is "GREY" back there. LOL.

Hey Mike, the first time old Todd T. brought one of these one my boat I laughed at him. He then proceeded to limit the boat in about 20 minutes. After I got over being his net boy I went to Joes and bought as many as I could afford. Hint, if you are on my boat and we get down to the last 'Bigfin' let the captain have it or swim to shore. No one laughs at the stupid name anymore. 'Rotating Salmon Pastry' is good. After all salmon eat breakfast and bad salmon prefer RSK.

Muh ha ha ha ha ha

It's a known fact that about 90% of dying Alewives (herring family)spin in a clockwise rotation. I'd imagine it's the same for Herring. That's why the plastic bait heads are made to spin clockwise. I also have an online video that shows the perfect rotation for bait. If anyone would like to see it, I'd be happy to post the url.

I have to agree with roeboat The rotation direction is secondary to the hook placement and depth My friend swears by standard rotation ,I prefere counter spin. Some times he out fishes me, somedays other way around.

Video
In case the UBB code didn't work here's the url http://www.hallcrash.com/triflash/video/new/
Remember, this is the internet and videos just don't turn out as good as the reel thing(sure wish it did though). If your isp gives you high BPS (bites per second), you should be able to view it quickly without much buffering. The full video is about 7 minutes long. There shorter clips there also.
Enjoy and thanks
