Pot Pulling with a Bouy?
Anybody pull there crab/ shrimp pots with a bouy system used to pull anchors? Seems like it would be cheaper than a buying a pot puller. Might take two bouys on a heavy pot?

Re: Pot Pulling with a Bouy?
Hey Marty,
sounds like a great idea especially 'outside' with deeper sets.
Hey BOE or Pilar, either of you ever try this and what do ya think ?
...need a quick way to connect and disconnect the EZpuller for each set.

Re: Pot Pulling with a Bouy?
I usually never crab more than about 25 feet and dont think would be worth the effort.
It might be nice for a shrimp pot in hoods canal when they are a couple hundred feet deep.

Re: Pot Pulling with a Bouy?
Pilar prefers the pot pullers that help buy gas and wear rain gear and high top boots .
See....
Oh yea, it helps if ya bring yer own pot....

Re: Pot Pulling with a Bouy?
Would need to put a hook or something on top of the pot rope so it would catch and not fall back down once you had it up.

Re: Pot Pulling with a Bouy?
No smiles,
Not a hook. If ya want to try this you need a puller like an EZ puller or one of the cheap knock offs. They allow the rope to pass one way but prevent (most of the time) the rope from sliding the other way.
You will want a very large buoy too.
Most of the time we crab in shallow water and the puller would be a pain. And they do not switch over very easy and you could need one per pot which would get expensive, especially if a voluntary pot checker got "attached" to it or it "floated" away.
Good luck and let us know if ya try it. I was thinking about it but it just seems like too much trouble. Besides, when it takes two people to pull the pot it's a good thing .
Later,
Mr. F.

Re: Pot Pulling with a Bouy?
I have been with a friend of mine who uses floats to pull his traps in the ocean. He usually sets in 60-70 feet of water with the heaviest, largest traps around. From the top of the water down I'll describe his setup. Float on top, then about 10 feet down the rope he has secured a lead weight of ~8-20 oz. Immediately below the weight he has secured one end of about 10" of stainless steel wire. Then below this a Danileson anchor puller has been
slid on. So it will not slide down the rope to the crab trap he has wrapped the wire around it. When it is time to pull the traps he will hook the float, hand pull the rope to get to the anchor puller. Free the anchor puller from the wire and clip two 5 gal. floats to the anchor puller, attach the rope above the anchor puller to a boat cleat and then motors off until the trap gets to the top. Then all he does is wrestle the trap and crabs into the boat.
I hope this explanation makes sense.

Re: Pot Pulling with a Bouy?
I have a buddy of mine who uses a bouy and a EZ puller to pull his pots. He fishes in the Puget Sound and is putting his pot anywhere from 40' to 100' of water. He says it works great.

Re: Pot Pulling with a Bouy?
Hook'd, a simple line drawing might help...should you be so inclined . Thanks.
Chas’n A Dream, that's the kinda feedback I was looking' for. We often set outside in +/- 100' . Hand pullin' a Danielson collapsible up from under 30' is one thing...but pullin' old protocos up a 100' gets old fast. Always lookin' for a better mouse trap.

Re: Pot Pulling with a Bouy?
Since I am not a hogliner in the big "C" I am not familiar with the anchor puller setup. I had the Idea of the hook to catch the Ring below a bouy so it wouldn't let the pot sink to the bottom when I came to retrieve it similiar to the anchor thing. This Danielson contraption interests me.....I hate pulling 100+ and its tough to do alone. I don't want to spend 400-700 for a pot puller if I can do it for 30 or less.
Need some more insight to understand this setup completely. If I can figure it out I will draw a picture and post it. Glad to see it is possible

dogfishboy,
Will try to find time to do a drawing for you but am real busy at work plus getting ready to spend some time in Hammond for a few days. I won't forget about the drawing.
