can't say that i've ever had much luck on pure hardware. most of my fish have been taken while drifting corkies and yarn, with either smelly jelly or shrimp scent applied. since i'm put smelly stuff on them, i don't consider that as pure hardware. i've gotten a few with sandshrimp under a bobber. i've pitched plenty of spinners and a few spoons and all i've gotten with them is ********* and smolts. i'm going to try to hit the deschutes in august and see if i can get a steelie on a spinner. from what i hear, the take is akin to foul hooking one of those sport bikes.

70% bait, but there seems to be times and places where nothing but hardware will do.

In the the smaller streams i tend to use plastic-ware...spin-n-glo's/bait, mostly in the winter....Any time i can get the boat out i use hardware,spinners and Brads/kwikfish/flatfish. I like using hardware better because when you get a strike ....you know it Today....using a kwikfish....My pole went down hard...i mean
HARD, The fish was leaving the water right as i was taking it out of the holder !!

No nibble about it

sorry guys....but it felt SO good !

Mrdorkfish
oops ! got off track....winter time steelhead/bait spring salmon/bait and everthing else...hardware !

Salmon 100% Bait:
When the Salmon River on Mt. Hood used to be open for Summer Steelhead I used to hook alot of Salmon on Marabou jigs. (Released of course.)It's a bait show for me. Eggs, Prawns, or Shrimp.

Steelhead 60% Hardware, 40% Bait:
When using hardware most of the Steelhead I catch are on Marabou Jigs, some are on Spinners. When using Bait, Sandshrimp has produced the best for me followed by Eggs and Worms.

Salmon: 99% bait. Although, this is really a function of how often I use bait vs. hardware. I am going to try more kwikfish and spinners when the conditions are right.

Steelhead: 75% bait. I rarely pull plugs for steelhead, usually go with diver/shrimp (except for native winter runs). When I drift fish for steelies, I often use just corkies and yarn (I consider that hardware). I think that if the conditions are right, there is no need to add bait. I also use spinners for the summer runs.

I'd have to say about 50-50 for me. Depends more on the run, and time of year.

Just like Hogtime, because of the water temp.

Warmer water calls for more hardware, while bait works well in cooler water. For me the cutoff point is approx 60 degrees. If the temp gets above that I generally use hardware.

If you wrap your Kwikfish with Sardine is it considered bait or hardware?

Hi Rauly,
I would think that if you wrapped Sardines on a Kwikfish, the Sardine would be considered Bait. It's a perishable. Kwikfish lasts a long time in the tackle box without freezing them and Sardines will have a Terrible Stench if left out of the freezer by the 5th day. I still think scents are hardware cause of it not perishing as rapidly as baits and I have had scents last longer than some hardware. Due to losing them of course.
Kwikfish= Hardware ( Non-perishable)
Sardines= Bait (Perishable)
Scents= Hardware (addatives for extra mileage)

Depends where I'm fishing.

Salmon in the ocean: 100% bait
Salmon in freswater: 90% lure, 10% eggs
Steelhead in a large body of water: 100% lure
Steelhead in river: 20% eggs, 80% lure

I'm a Kwikfish and Wiggle Wart believer!
