BlueWater Boats
Hey Y'all
I have a question for the masses:
Say a fella is looking for a Ocean boat around the 24' mark. What is the best bang for the buck, and what are the things that one should look for in an outboard or inboard model if buying a used boat?

Re: BlueWater Boats
Not from what I've skippered, but from what I've seen. The Bayliner trophy is an excellent offshore boat at a reasonable price. The old generation Bayliners got a lot of bad 'construction' press. But the newer ones (last 10 years) have had great reviews by boating experts. Outstanding construction, fishing layout, design and seaworthiness.
Frequently fishing off of the west side of Vancouver Island, I have noticed that many of the big outfitters have gone to the Trophy. 99% of the time they are outfitted with Mercury Offshore power.
My personal opinion is that Whaler and Grady White are the premium tough saltwater boats. But,our focus was "bang for the buck".
If I lived in a salty region... a Trophy would be my choice.

Re: BlueWater Boats
I AM PARTIAL TO THE STRIPER'S, BECAUSE BAYLINER BOATS HAVE GONE DOWN HILL IN QUALITY. STRIPERS LOOK GREAT AND DONT COST AS MUCH. TAKE A LOOK AT THEM AT THE BOAT SHOW NEXT YEAR, AND COMPARE.

Re: BlueWater Boats
I've looked at every outboard striper for sale in the valley for the last 3 months and have two big problems with them. The captains seat/steering wheel alignment isn't good, and none of them have fishboxes! With an outboard you have no big swimstep to strap a cooler to. From what i've seen of the interiors and shell, there is nothing to tell me they are of a higher quality, granted these boats are all 1990 or newer. The striper does appear to have a deeper v where the bow breaks the chop so it might be a little softer. As boater would say, just my worthless two cents... Joe

Re: BlueWater Boats
Pete, you are right....The Osprey is good looking. Although you gotta admit, dogfishboy's SeaSport is a sweet vessel, too!
My guess is that we are talkin' BIG BUCKS boats here !

Grady White .... Accept no substitute.
Yeah it costs, but were talking boats here, they all cost.
They'll even put your name on it when they build it for you.

Re: BlueWater Boats
I've been boat shopping too. Won't due any good fer a year or two but if ya don't have a dream ya don't have desire so I just keep dreaming.
Here are the ones I'm looking hard at...
Shamrock Boats I like the 220 walk around..
Shamrock 220 Walkaround
But I am seriously considering an Arima. No they are not 24' but the 21 and 22 look pretty good.
http://www.arimaboats.com/
I am leaning towards the Sea Ranger 21' Hard top. Well, when my ship comes in anyway
Another serious consideration is the custom 21' Ed Wing Ocean , like the Puffin. That is one sea worthy craft. Couldn't find a web site but I believe he is based out of Astoria.
Hope ya have an extra seat on that new vessle fer a lip ripper like me. I'll bring my lucky pot
Crabs are good

Re: BlueWater Boats
You know Johnboy is an authority.
I want one in my lifetime so I had to lower my standards a little.
Here is another line that looks good:
Silver Streak Boats
These boats are built in BC but the exchange rate is pretty good.
John, the Boston Whaler 21' Conquest, Ooooo Ahhhh Mmmmmm. Those Coast Guard prefered floatation devices would be reeeel nice on that vessle
Drum roll please.....
Grady White
Man even the web page looks reel nice.
If ya haven't seen one of these give a click and be impressed.
Last but NOT least....
Boston Whaler
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>If commando raids, oil rig fires, blowouts, floods and felons can’t stop this incredibly durable boat, your kids probably can’t either. It’s nice to know that when they head out for a day on the water, they’re in an unsinkable Whaler. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
Kind of says it all huh.
Man ya see what ya started.

Re: BlueWater Boats
For the buck I would consider an older Sea Ray. My dad'd 22.5' is trailerable yet the heavey deep Vee absolutly slices through the chop. We chew up and leave all boat in our wake if ... there is any chop at all. It has a V8. Email and I can find out more details. I would try to find one that some lost soul has poored his life into and just wants out (new engine and rebuilt outdrive).

Mike it does come with missles if you like and thing else that fits on a hummer.Think how much nicer people would be on the water.
The price tag I do not know since only the goverment can afford them must be big bucks.
Hope to cross the bar with you and capt pilar this AUG will be down around the 8th.
Good luck and good fishing.

Re: BlueWater Boats
Older Sea Rays (mid-1970s), either the 22 ft. Overnighter or the 24 ft. Weekender, are hard to beat. They are available for a song, built like a tank, have galleys and v-bunks, are trailerable and very seaworthy. Stay away from the Sedanbridge models as they are top-heavy and roll around too much on swells.

Hey Thumper,
I agree about Searays, and Reinell too of that era, but there is alot to be said for a hardtop and a bulkhead door.

Re: BlueWater Boats
Is it just me, or do those boats that have a walkaround / Trough around them that funnel all the water you might take over the bow, and you will take water over the bow , right into the cockpit and engine compartment . The new 22' Arima hardtop has the trough but channels it off the boat as you can see in this link. http://www.arimaboats.com/seats.htm
...know what I mean?

Re: BlueWater Boats
yep, arima channels it off, but the other boats have self bailing decks, i don't think the arima does, (could be wrong though)

Re: BlueWater Boats
Yea, I know about self-bailing cockpits on some of those models, but I just don't like dumping all that water back there. I've seen too many times when the scuppers get pluged with various items such as beercaps, rags, etc. . Maybe if they enlarged them to around 12"dia I'd feel better. Re: BlueWater Boats
good point, they do get plugged! most of the time it dosen't take much, even a little fish bait guts will do it.
