Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
Got a side profile? I guess it would depend on the unit I was hunting too...
I can't really tell from that view, but he looks to be about a 14-15 incher. I wouldn't fault ya

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
Can't tell what the mass is like, or the length of the prongs. How many days you have to hunt? If you have all week to hunt the Whitehorse, I'd pass him up.

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
If you are looking for a goat to go high in the book, this is not your critter, I would take him, cause i dont care about the book, fine goat indeed, but not a booner. put some more mass on him and you are looking at a high scoring buck.

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
He's a good buck , I wouldn't pass, but be careful on trying to search for a record cause you may lose your only chance at your only antelope. But i'd take him and head home with a BIG smile.....

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
Pretty antelope. I would certainly take him, even without the side view.
If you're looking for something to get your name in a book somewhere, you better pass. Looks awful light, and the diggers probably aren't very big.

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
Wed or Thursday and that is the best you have seen, Boom. Saturday morning, I don't know. Its a very nice buck and one most would be proud to take he looks to be 16ish. The ears are 6" so 2X the length he has a couple inches longer. I cheated and took the photo into photo shop and used the measure tool. I've spent the last 3 weeks measuring every antelope I can find on any ones wall. He looks like he has good mass. With a side shot showing really nice mass and prongs then maybe bang first couple of days.

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
Just asked my 9 year old daughter if you should shoot or not. She said that you should not shoot because it has a doe behind it. Smart kid. Then I explained what you were talking about and she said "why does he have to ask that can't he see it's a nice one".
So their you got you answer from one of Oregons newest hunters.

Sanatiam, If you don't shoot him chase him to me !!!! Bummer your not getting paid to hunt. I got plenty of vacation pay. Getting paid to Pronghorn, deer and elk hunt this year. Leaving tomorrow real early. Can't wait. Could be interesting weather with a cold front coming in. I'll look for you. Alan

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
He looks pretty good at first glance because he has nice long tops, but his ears are taller than his cutters and he doesn't carry much mass. I would say 14". As long as you have waited and as hard as you hunt I think you would be disappointed if you shot him right off the bat.

That is not a bad buck...he looks to me to have some length, but not really much mass. I wouldn't shoot that one the first day, but you would be hard pressed to find anyone to fault you for shooting it. Now to see if I have any other goat pictures that are any nicer...

Wow.. I'm right on the fence as well with that one. I would think really hard about it and probably keep hunting. He is pretty thin. But I would come back to him if I didn't see a better one.

Personaly I would shoot him I didn't realize that Oregon was such a mecca for Trophy bucks. I think a 14 or 15 inch buck is a decent representive of a nice buck in Oregon.

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
Santiam,
Thats a pretty buck - is he the biggest buck out there who knows. If you like the way he looks then by all means take him. If you are not seeing many bucks then again take him and be glad you got to hunt antelope.
As far as how big, I'm no expert but since I have a tag this year have been looking at every picture i can, so based on antelope ears being 6-7 inches, the tip of his ear is just above his cutter/diggers so double that he is right at maybe 14 or so maybe 14 1/2. Based on everything thats a perfect Oregon antelope. Maybe a little more mass and he would be perfect.
I wish you best of luck and also hope to share pictures after the season.

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
You can't see the mass. You also can't really tell the length, because sometimes they hook back so much.
My buck below, based just upon ear length comparison, would only be 13.5 or so, but when you look at how he hooks, he's 15".
You also can't tell how heavy he is looking straight on:
I knew I'd get a chance to post these pics again!

Hunting antelope my whole life in montana I would pass early in the hunt. He is a thin, high 13, low 14 inch buck.

Horns on these guys do not include the curl for height inches. 13.5 doesn't curl to 15. If it does I have a 17.8 and 16.5 inch bucks on my wall.

If I see one on Saturday AM like that he's going down. Only going to hunt 3 days because I can't make myself give up any of my archery elk hunt. Even though the tag is tough to get(well it wasn't that tough ) antelope just don't do it for me like chasing bulls.

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
Pass. The height is ok but it looks weak in mass and length of the cutters. It would be a good last day buck. If you have plenty of time to hunt don't punch your tag to quickly. Good you're out scouting early so you'll know what's available.

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
He is not a booner but a very nice one. Without side view it is tough, good length, face really black on nose typical of older buck, rest of coloration good. Several years ago I held out and ended up with a 12.5", a dink, but the hunt was fun and exhausting. Adding picture of an 18" buck I took in 2003 that does not make book.
Mass and prongs are where the score is. The one in your picture is one I would have a hard time passing on and I have this on my wall.

I think the majority here are talking about the length which Boone and Crockett accept. That length includes from the base of the horn, to the tip of the horn.
Maybe you are just talking about from the lowest point (the base) to the highest point straight up (the top of the curl)?

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
Pest, if you look at the Oregon Record Book score sheet, you do count the curl. The measurement is taken from the outside edge of the horn where it attaches to the skull, to the tip of the horn along the outside curve of the horn.

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
Santiam try this, it is from an earlier post.
http://www.bowsite.com/BOWSITE/featu...gingpronghorn/
I also bought a DVD called "Size is Everything" by Tony Grimmett. Grimmett is a guide in the SW who's hunters have taken many huge antelope.
His web site actually has pictures of some monsters, live and dead... The tallest antelope is 21 inches!
Hope all this helps..
Good Luck.

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
If I wasn't looking for a book buck and just wanted a good Antelope I would shoot him. You might be suprized It could score higher than some are guessing. I have shot a couple ot 14 to 15 inch bucks and to me this one looks to be at least that big. Mass is tough to judge for this photo. Unless I new that there were much better bucks available I would probably shooth him. Good luck and have fun, I wish I had those choices to make.

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
I'd definitely look him over closely, one way or the other. He is enough bigger physically than the does around him that he may be an older buck, and there may be extra horn you can't see in the photo. My cousin got one that scored 76 that looked pretty marginal when he shot. The points swept straight back, and therefore didn't look very long--no 'heart shape'. This one may do that.
If this were the best one you saw after putting in a reasonable amount of time scouting, or if you are hunting a highly pressured area, or if you're just not seeing many antelope, then drop him. If he's one of the first few you saw, or it's still early in the season, or if there's not any other hunters around, I'd pass.
My personal rule of thumb is that if the prong starts above the tip of the ear, I shoot. This one is close. He doesn't appear to have lots of length or mass that would instantly make me change my mind, and I can't tell what his diggers look like. But the others antelope don't look spooked, so you probably have soe time to look him over.

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
That's a no brainer for me, and probably 1/2 of the guys here who claim they'd wait. That's like tossing back a 40 lb. chinook to try and fill your tag weith a 50. I've got a 13.5" buck on the wall and that buck in the pic has got to be 15 inches. You do measure the curl in Oregon. That's a dandy.

I never get tired of looking at pics of speed goats. He's nice. Make a good stalk, let the herd clear the zone, and anchor him.

LOL...I dont think anyone is blind, just a lot of different goals and standards, especially after waiting 10 to 12 years for an opportunity.
For someone willing to hunt daylight to dark and wear out a little boot leather they might find a better one. For the guys who do their hunting from a pick up or 4 wheeler and are back in camp by 10am it would be a nice one.

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
I know i have been greedy befor and wanted bigger when I should of taken what the woods gave me at that time. A greedy hunter is not always a good hunter. The only thing that matters is what you think and feel about this animal. I have some small animals that gave me a better hunt than most and thats what i remember when I look at my trophy.

you mean a 15 pounder hoping for a 40? Okay, now that makes sense. It's not that great of a buck. He might have a little length, but the cutters are tiny and he isn't going to magically gain a bunch of mass when he turns his head. Next season, he will probably be a great buck. But the way tags are in this state, I'm sure very few people who had the tag would pass on him cause guys get their tag every 5-10 years and god forbid they not kill something!
And not to mention if your into score he wouldn't score worth a darn. Take the above mentioned things coupled with the fact that most of his length is above the cutter and you don't have much.
BUT------To each his own. If someone shot that buck and was happy with it, then Right On and more power to ya!! I'm just jealous of every tag holding guy in Oregon right now!! Good luck to all..

Re: Antelope pic...Shoot or pass???
What was the question? Oh yea "what's your take on this buck?" and "not looking for a booner, just a mature buck."
Looks like a mature buck to me.

Just think of how many big game hunters will NEVER get a shot a buck that nice in Oregon - even guys who draw a few tags over their lifetime.
You're the guy who looks at your neighbor's new Denali and says "that's not that great of an SUV, I'd have gone for the Escalade"
Like you said - if he's happy with it, that's all that matters, but based on my experience, I think you could hunt real hard all season and not find something as nice.

I'm not thinking for most guys in Oregon, more along the lines of what I would do if it was my tag and looking through my scope.
And you can have the Denali, I'll take the Expedition. Short lift and 35's makes a pretty aggresive family rig!!
