The rut will start the same as always, rain or shine. The cool damp weather will just make the hunt more enjoyable!

Agree with the above,

Taking calls into the woods this early is almost worthless in most cases. This is why we get educated elk in late season when they really are rutting.

I'll bet the woods close up anyway!! Anyone want to bet? If it rained straight to the openner it would still be all locked up. till about a week befor the close. watch!

I'm on the coast and its wet here, i know its different inland. I'll toss a bet on that. I bet it stays open "on the coast" for at least the first week.

The rut is triggered by the amount of daylight in a 24hr. period....the photoperiod as they call it. Some years they prefer to do "it" at night so as to conserve energy etc.

I have a question about the rut. Some people think it has to do with the weather and others daylight. If it has to do with daylight; then why do mule deer in Mexico not come into rut until Jan. when the mule deer in Oregon start in Nov? I believe that even the whitetail deer in FL come into rut around Jan; although I may be wrong. Could it be a combo of both weather and daylight The third week has always been the best week for me hunting those Roosie's in the coast range, although last year the mature bulls were with the herds of cows on opening weekend and bugling like crazy. It all ended after the opening weekend and they all went silent.

when you say this early, im assuming your saying before the season right?
If you think im leaving my calls at home the first week of the season, your crazy. Sure the elk get educated by the later part of the season, but those big herd bulls are also much tougher to kill when they have already gathered there heirom.

Early season calling is flat out deadly, Period. You get those bulls early before they have aquired large numbers of cows. Your chances at a close encounter in the early season with a big bull are much greater in the start of the rut. ie: the lady gathering process.

You can wait for the late season when they are " Really rutting" all you want, but this feller wont be.

I agree with Blacktail on that...hands down.

There are a lot of bowhunters out there and everyone of them is squezzzzing the holly hell out of there "houchie Mommmmas" and Blowing on there "power bugles" in every clear cut in Oregon.
I say the opening weekend is one of your best opps. to get that untainted herd bull!

I think that first week can be really good we have killed bulls the first weekend that were going nuts. The rut I don't believe has any thing to do with the weather I think it is all about day light. I get up to walk my 3 miles every morning and this week it is not really getting light until after 6 so it is changing a few weeks ago it was light at 5:30 that lets me know fall is here.

As to the rain I am glad to get any moisture. The problem we face boys unless it stays wet and Montana and Idaho and Eastern Oregon get some moisture the private companies may close us out any way as there are no resources left in Oregon and that might scare off the private guys because if for some reason a fire breaks out there are no tankers helicopters or personal in the state left to fight a grass fire on the westside. We need a early snow far East of us.

Lets hope for the best

I love all the talk ever year on rut timing.. Everyone is right.. How about the cows that dont breed during the early rut that come back into estrus? Do the bulls say that it is not the rut anymore so i can't breed you?

One thing that a lot of bow-hunters mess up on is realizing that not all bulls are willing to answer back. Just because they are not screaming back at you does not mean he is not sneaking up on you.

Very true and raking in the early season can be very productive as they want to see the competition

Man I'd give anything to see some rain. It hasn't rained in the Bend area in months. It might be wet on the coast, but don't be surprised if the forests on the east side are severely restricted. I just did an excavation project and it's as dry down 6'-8' as it is at the ground surface.

I talked to a biologist this morning and he said,no rut this year as the moon will be blocked by meteorites due to a 100 year cycle.

Can you imagine what you would happen to the elk popultion if that happend not to mention what would happen to all the bow hunters in Oreogn we would have to spend millions on ear doctors to figure out what happend it would be a new diesase called bugle disease to the ear.. No rouge hunter that would be terrible..p:grin:

"Rain is gradually tapering off around the northwest. Look for mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers today. Highs will struggle to reach the upper 60s, but by tomorrow afternoon the sun will come out again and we dry out. Look for summer to return in full force, with highs in the 80s by Wednesday."

Yeah i made it out today! Saw a ton of elk filmed 2 bulls fighting, heard several bulls sounding off, also filmed 2 small bucks. The animals were out and about enjoying the "Perfect August Weather".

Does that mean you can hunt? A buddy drew a once in a lifetime tag for elk. Will it be open?
