Dodo sighting Garibaldi
Went out yesterday for some longfin. Scratched a few at 25mi then headed west about 40mi. Sorry, I don't have any numbers. Got into a good school of decent sized fish. We came across a bunch of kelp and kept hooking up when trolling between it all. On one of the stops, my buddy was saying the fish was making weird head shakes. I didn't think much of it and proceeded to bring in the rest of the spread. As I reeled in my zuker, I saw a shadow behind it. Make that RIGHT behind it. I kept a steady retrieve hoping it would bite, and I noticed a different color and profile. About 10' from the boat the yellow figure veered left and swam away. Not before I got a very good look at a beauty dorado about 3' long. I freaked out! The funny fighting fish came unbuttoned and we resumed trolling. Was the dorado's buddy on the line? We will never know. I put out some bigger lures out and we trolled through a few more times. I even tried a strip bait with some tuna belly, but didn't see the dodo again. Wish we had live bait aboard. That image will continue to haunt me until I land one, I'm sure. We ended the day with a good fish to ice ratio and headed back on a rougher than expected sea. TB
