Quick comment about radio com and fish numbers
We fished out of Depoe yesterday, Halibut and Salmon. While we were into halibut territory at the north end of the banana, a call came on the radio for some halibut numbers. The guy asking for numbers called out to Salty Dogs for numbers, waited about 7 seconds, then said, sarcastically "That's real white of you." Now, at the time I had just finished reeling up my fish, and was on my way to the radio to give the guy the coordinates of where we were when the smart comment transmitted. I sat back down.
Does this happen often? I don't sit on my radio ready to transmit numbers at the drop of a hat. I'm fishing. I don't get it - why be rude when you're asking for a favor?

Re: Quick comment about radio com and fish numbers
I heard that too and did not reply
It was most likely a lurker
jeezzz all a guy would have had to do was look around for the 100 boats crammed into a 1 sq mile area to find it
I would not sweat it but it would be nice for people to have more patience out there

Yeah, we hear this all the time. Get that right here on the internet for everyone in view too. People just don't seem to understand I guess. Oh well, gotta find another rock to stand on.

Heh heh heh.... Me too.
How many times to you hear a request for info, or just a query to see if any 'Dogs are out there, but no identification or anything. I usually don't bother to answer.
Sharing out there is a two-way street, and nobody's obligated to tell anyone anything.

I would not worry about it. More folks simply need to follow Catch and Eat's signature.
So much for the wide open space in the big blue. May as well fish OC in the spring because so far, I can't tell the difference 30 miles west of the beach. <sigh>

Dang I heard that
2 years ago it was uncommon to ever see another boat out 35 miles
Now it looks like buoy 10 did when there was salmon in the CR 15 years ago
And it did remind me of willamette springer/shad fishing
I could not believe how many boats there were that would change direction and troll right in front or in back of me
I also had a boat follow so close behind me for about 30 minutes that if my long line had got a fish they would have filleted it with thier prop
I was forced to turn one way then the other way at least 5 or 6 times
Finally I just trolled west til I was alone but that never lasted long
I think my boat is an idiot magnet

Re: Quick comment about radio com and fish numbers
Some people want immediate gratification; some are just gimme, gimme, gimme; and some are reasonable, want to figure out how things work among the dogs and know it is a two way street, at least eventually. I think the same type of attitude is sometimes exhibited on this forum when folks post a request for info without even looking at the posts already up on the board. Sometimes the answer to their question is clearly going to be in a post already on the board and at the top part of the board too!! Maybe because the dogs are such a sharing group, some people don't understand that it's a community and not their personal information service.
It can work the other way too, folks can learn much from the board. Last year I took my son and a friend of his from Bend out and by the second trip the friend had made a point of reading the board to learn the "customs" of the salty dogs. I was impressed he took the time to do that and he paid attention too. My son also has learned lots from the board, I really like that he's read some of the posts about what it takes to be good crew and "learn he has"! He's become the best crew that goes with me, of course I'm always happy to have him along, but it's even better that he's such good crew!

Re: Quick comment about radio com and fish numbers
This is the first year I have fished my own boat for tuna. I have been a boat ho for years. I look at the SST's and Chloro charts and read where fish have been caught earlier in the week. I put a game plan together before I ever hit the ramp and I head west. I too have been the idiot magnet. Boats so close I can't work an area so I gotta head somewhere else so I got some room. Just blows me away.
Oh well, we better get used to it.

Re: Quick comment about radio com and fish numbers
isnt the power of the internet grand....
that and the new 4 stroke motors are far more fuel efficient than the older motors, giving way more boats (mine included) the range to get out and get to the blue water...

Re: Quick comment about radio com and fish numbers
See, that's why I was ready to give the guy numbers. I've learned so much from the Dogs, and I wanted to "Pay it forward" by sharing numbers of the spot I was in and getting fish. There weren't other boats around, and I thought I would give this guy numbers that weren't in the pool of fishers on the banana. Oh,well. You catch more flies (or in this case, fish) with honey. . .

Re: Quick comment about radio com and fish numbers
OK, from a new guys perspective I've been lurking for about 2 years, didn't post until this year... I wanted to wait until I could avoid repetitive questions or ignorant posts(probably have struck out already on both ). This guy is afoul of several things, 1)bad radio technique (see most of stickfish's posts), 2) one sided attempt at getting info and 3) a plain rude racially charged statement...personally, I'm not real PC but what's the point of throwing that type of tantrum into the mix!!
