Re: Offshore Salmon Quota Status
Jetty and rocky shore fishing was slow for bottomfish and perch this week. Redtail surfperch were reportedly caught at Ona Beach (just south of Newport) and on ocean beaches around Charleston. Herring and anchovy are reported in several places including Yaquina Bay and the Chetco and Rogue Rivers. Fishing from charter and private boats coastwide produced fair catches of bottomfish and good to excellent catches of salmon over the weekend. Anglers participating in the selective coho fishery (Cape Falcon to Humbug Mt.) averaged 1.15 salmon per angler through July 6. The fish are being landed from water of 52 degrees to 54 degrees F, and catch rates are better when the ocean is calm. A lot of non-clipped coho are being released. Chinook need not have a fin-clip to be retained. Forty-three percent of the 55,000 coho quota was taken through July 6. The salmon fishery between Leadbetter Pt. (WA) and Cape Falcon yielded 1.89 salmon per angler on opening day (July 1). A few halibut inside the 30-fathom curve have been landed out of Garibaldi and Pacific City.
