Re: Heading east, anyone have lake/river suggestions?
Ok, I'm mostly familier with some of the lakes (and rivers) on the Washington side. First off, there's a lake that I visited for the first time last week on the Washington side off of SR-14 right near the Dalles Dam (it's in plain view from the lake). There are some deep spots in this smaller lake. It's a little bigger than Battle Ground Lake, very scenic too. Not very many people either. The only drawbacks are the possibilities of encounters with rattlesnakes and the fact that it was very windy up there and hard to cast. Had to drive around a little while to find it though. It's at the end of a gravel road. To find that road I turned off SR-14 onto a paved road and then eventually ended up near an industrial plant or something, which is where the gravel road started. I know these are lousy directions, but there was signs that read "Spearfish Park." Just follow those or maybe somebody else on the board can give you better directions. Anyway, I seen probably 4 larger fish jump while I was there. They looked like smallmouth bass? The first fish I caught was a 17 inch rainbow. The next fish I lost and it was about the same size. I thought I had probably hit the jackpot on this lake-I figured all the fish were 17 inchers. But then the next fish turned out to be a 10 incher that swallowed the hook and I had to keep it. This fish was then proceeded by 4 more 10 inchers and I was done fishing. The bass just wouldn't bite. A local guy told me about another lake in the area called Horsethief Lake. You have to pay to get in there though. I'd recommend Spearfish, Icehouse and Littles Ashes Lakes (before and after the Bridge of the Gods, although they have a lot of algae in them now and nobody's fishing them-there probably mostly fished out as far as the trout go), and Horsethief, even though I haven't been there, the local said it was fairly good. You could also give some of the other lakes on SR-14 a try for bass, etc. You could even fish the Klickitat River for spring chinook jacks/steelhead, the docks in Camas/Washougal for *********/or whatever, the Washougal River where a few steelhead are being caught, or spinners off the bench on the Big White Salmon River for steelhead, I think it's a little early for that though.
These are all places to go on the Washington side though. You're probably already familier with these places. Oh well I got some typing practice anyway . If you're looking more for spots on the Oregon side, maybe someone else on the board can help? Maybe somebody else can suggest some Oregon spots.
