Default Fishing Around Salem

I will be attending The International Guild of Candle Artisan convention in Salem next week. There appears to be a lot of opportunity to escape and do some fishing. Being a Pure Bred Husky Dog, I am not even sure how to find Salem without a map. So my questions are these:

Where to fish and what for?
Steelhead?
Trout?
Run out to the Coast?
Best place to Drink in Salem?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Fishguts,

It all depends on how much time you have and what type of fishing you like. Within an hour drive there are a couple of lakes that are stocked with trout. Detroit lake is the biggest and is about 45 minutes away. The nice thing about Detroit is if you fly fish you can fish the Santiam on the way up to the lake. Silverton resevoir is closer and from what I heard a consitent producer of stocker trout. If you have the time you will be about an hour and a half from Newport and could go out on a charter for coho but that would require a full day of fishing.

If you target in on what kind of fishing you are up for I could help you out a little better.

Born & raised in Salem (not my fault! ) ...

Supposed to be lots of steelhead in the Santiam; Detroit Lake is REALLY LOW on water, how far do you want to drive ??? There are some old gravel pits w/bass and brood trout right in town. Willamette river sloughs for various panfish, bass, and mutant things.

Tell me where the convention is, I'll tell you where to drink - good beer, cheap beer, or "the hard stuff" ??

Oh, to find Salem, go south on I-5 until you get there!!

Cheap, cold beer ...
Safeway! Fred Meyer!

If I knew what part of town you'll be in, I could make suggestions. Sports bar? Biker tavern? Quiet? Loud? "Dancing" girls? (I don't know ANY of these places, but I can ask around )

You'll be wanting your Santiam steelhead info from someone else. Beer, I know about ...

Fishguts , this Beaver loves to tell Huskies where to go !!! JK ...fish the Santiam for steelies with spinners or bait ...30-40 miles east of town ...drinks downtown at The Brick or the Sweet River on Liberty St or The Pointe on Commercial St or for something a little more "entertaining"(Hey , they do have sports on multiple tv screens !!) there is Stars on Front Street a mile or two east of downtown ...do enjoy our humble little city ...swampy

Thanks Phish;
Sports bar, generally. Got 145 hits on the search for the Santiam. Will probably give that a shot at least once. I think the Convention is at the Red Lion Hotel.

Fish,

If I were a guy that was looking for Mr. Metalhead, I'd definately wander toward the Santiam. You can take 22 east and run into her. Fisherman's Bend is a good spot. Right off 22. Right side. The Frank Hole is a likely place for Mr. Metalhead to be lurking. It is accessible from Fisherman's Bend. If you flyfish, this is a GREAT spot. It's where I caught my first steelie on the fly. What a load of fun!
If you prefer Mr. Spottytail though, I'd venture toward the coast. Garibaldi, Newport or CR. You can find many a charter here for not too expensive, or perhaps even a fellow IFisher with a boat and a need for crew. Best o'luck to you.

Better Lucky Than Good!
