Coho Are Still Out There.....
and Bubba is still there, too.
We went out on the Umatilla II today out of Newport, and what was to be a 6-hour trip turned into 8. Terry headed 20 miles south just offshore from Yachats. While the bite wasn't hot and died several times, we did manage to limit the boat (20 silvers, 1 25# and 1 8# chinook). Terry likes to for everyone to get their money's worth.
Weather was foggy and what looked like about a 2-4 swell died to nearly flat halfway through the trip and then picked up considerably.
All we saw was the huge tail, but the deckhand finally had to break him off after about 6 wraps were left on the reel, so Bubba is still waiting.
The Umatilla II has 4 downrigger mounts, of which 2 were used - 1 set at 25', the other at 40'. The 25# chinook was caught on the 25-footer, and the 40-footer was all silvers.
Bait of choice was flashers and hootchies with a chunk of anchovy on at least a 6/0 hook, but mine were fooled by a white/chartreuse spoon with no flasher. Depth was shallow - about 15' maximum. Most brands of divers were used.
All in all, a great day, but I wish this monitor would stop rocking .
