Default EugeneArea varmints/predators

Hello all,

I am looking for places to hunt within mountain-biking distance of Eugene (I can bike a ways to hunt). I am particularly interested in killing nutria however the steep-sloped canals they love seem to all be in the city limits.
Also if anyone in the Eugene area is interested in going hog hunting I have found some land that has feral hogs on it to hunt. I don't have a car, though, and am in need of a hunting partner/ride. Thanks for any help offered!

I'm in Hillsboro, but would be willing to drive down and pick you up to go hog hunting. Send a PM and we can work something out.

The whine of VICTORY over those lowly waterfowl from the south end of the valley!

Aw, we're just funnin' around. He'll figure out pretty quickly we're a bunch of jokesters, and it's always nice to have somebody new on the board.

As for me, I don't know much about the varmints and predators down in the south valley, although I hear roasted duck is pretty good! Guess we'll find out this fall!!

Keep it up, guys! Nothing like a little rivalry to keep my post bumped-up to the top!

Hey all,

Well my name's Chris. I'm 36, was raised in Corvallis, and live in Eugene. I am a lamp-worker by trade and enjoy working hard being my own boss. I am looking into starting a line of glass fishing lures (no two alike so the fish will have never seen it). I was raised in a non-hunting home though I was taught to shoot by my military-trained father. I have physically left the Willamette Valley/Oregon maybe 10 or twelve times since I was three and I love my state very much and feel blessed to be an Oregonian.
I enjoy MMA (mostly Muay Thai, JKD and Jujitsu) though I have not been active as of late. I would like to hunt up-close and personal to the game rather than shoot it from a mile away.
I choose alternative weapons to the centerfire. I am going to get a Cap N Ball revolver to play with soon but my main emphasis is to bring awareness to the magnum adult airgun (hey I head that! LOL).
If I can take a feral hog or sheep, maybe a coyote in Oregon I am certain I will be included in an article in an online hunting magazine for airguns. There are plenty of guys that have taken hogs with airguns but not in Oregon (yet) and I feel an Oregonian should be the first. That is my big dream right now; taking a feral hog in Oregon (that and winning an MMA fight!).
Sorry guys I cannot legally take duck with an airgun (yet) and the Beavers are part of the reason I want the nutria gone so I'm not touching them.
This is my first .45 airgun. I will be receiving another airgun in a couple of months that is much more powerful and would be very well suited for deer. If I modify it to muzzleloader configuration it may be legal to use as a muzzleloader during the centerfire season; I need to meet with the proper authorities and make a presentation as they will not understand what these airguns can do if I try to explain it over the phone.
I know airhunters that have done that in other states. Here is some good news we airgunners got just today! Hunting Deer with Magnum Airguns is now legal in the state of Missouri!

http://www.network54.com/Forum/41400...roved+today%21

Click on the picture for a peek at my current .45 varmint-getter, the "Bad News Boomstick". The barrel was badly leaded when recording those velocities so those same bullets should go a little bit faster now. Plus I am still experimenting with fill pressures and bullet diameters down to the thousandth to get the best performance. I'm told this gun will do quite a bit better than I've seen when right. I am also having custom bullet molds designed and made for my airguns by none other than Veral Smith.
Well you went and got me started; better save something for any responses. Groups are at 25 meters.

So, can we pop yotes in urban areas with these air guns, or are they still considered firearms? They sound pretty cool!!

They are NOT considered firearms by any stretch. From what I'm told: yes, you can pop yotes (that's the plan!) with them if you understand it's not going to drop them like lightning like a .22-250 but kills more like an arrow or a cap and ball revolver might. Be prepared to do a little bit of trailing and they should be expired by the time you get to them.
I wouldn't feel comfortable firing my .45 anywhere I wouldn't feel comfortable firing a 1911 .45ACP I would not fire it in town.
I don't think it is legal to fire any kind of air rifle in the Eugene city limits anyhow if I'm not mistaken; even a bb gun. However outside the city limits I see no reason why not.
I also have a .25 air rifle that will put out a 36 grain pellet at over 1100 fps. I got a bunch of 42 grain pellets for it as well for the rock doves, sage rats, and bullfrogs.

There was a thread about 18 months ago about airguns, I'm going to resurect that thread so we don't hijack your topic here.

Again, welcome to iFish!

On your general topic of varmint/predators, who's gonna get ticked if we're dropping nutes and yotes around town? How bad are the police gonna scream?

Have you been to Eugene? Full of bunny huggers ready to defend the poor, defenseless nutria.
Again it is not safe to shoot in town with these rifles. They are to powerful.

Butcher,
I sent you a PM re: hog hunting.
Forgot to mention .. I see almost uncountable numbers of nutria on the Willamette while duck hunting late in the day. I can't imagine anyone having a problem with you shooting them. Just be certain you are not seeing a beaver which also are active at that time of day.

What if you go to a .20cal, and subsonic (please, don't get the idea I have any clue I know what I'm talking about; I've been reading about this topic for about 15 minutes.) Wouldn't it reduce ricochet if you used hollow points?

I'd rather use a slingshot with a 60 grain ball-bearing or something than a .20 going sub-sonic. Hey now there's an idea! Jackpot! I could clean-up the whole drainage system along the protected wetlands and do my part to further protect them!
A hollow-point might not ricochet as much but it is still possible. I'd rather not risk it. I recently heard of a .22lr round ricocheting off a lake and hitting a women driving her car right behind the ear a quarter-mile away killing her.

So you're saying .22cal is the minimum, or .25cal? And supersonic is better than subsonic?

Whether Supersonic is better than sub-sonic is a whole nother' thread entirely!

I know guys that kill sandrats and rockchucks with .20's; they are very accurate when tuned. In general you just have less options for shot placement and range with the larger vermin due to the reduced energy. I would prefer using something that will smack'm hard and clean with a bit more penetration. My air.45 with142 grain roundball approaching 900fps is just the ticket.
I have yet to determine the maximum point-blank range as of yet. I'm going to guess with roundball it will be 70 meters but I am going to limit all my shots to 50 meters for now as I am very confident shooting at that distance with a rest. I'm going to go sight it in for roundball through 200 grainers tomorrow if I have to ride my bike out Crow Road to do it.

Here is a video you may enjoy. No gore so I figured it was acceptable to post. This is a fellow airgunner I met on the boards hunting out in the desert. His rifle is pretty much identical to my .25.

So, if a .25 drops a rabbit like that, it should do a good number on nutes and similarly sized beasts. Your .45 should be capable of dropping a yote in short order. I agree with you about the danger of those things in town, even though they are legal. That .45 round might not go as far as a firearm round, but it's gonna carry a punch for several hundred yards.

Yea he dropped that rabbit with authority there! Had to be a CNS hit.
You can see a few more videos of him shooting ground squirrels with different airguns and pellets.
I am going to PM you a video that may be a little graphic for the board. It shows what a 385 grain hollowpoint out of a completely custom air rifle does to a jack at 50 yards. I think roundball would have been worse on game that size. It also shows just how tough a jack can be and their extreme will to live!

I've just started varmint hunting this year. I've had some great time over in Dufur / Wamic area. I am looking to do some varmint hunting in the Springfield/Eguene area.

This way I can scout deer as well as varmint hunt.

I've been hunting gray diggers/ ground squirrels on Friends road & Badger Creek
General Directions: Go East on I84 (Exit 87) to hwy 197 Go east / pass Dufur(15 miles) , right on Friends road (3+ miles).

Could you give me a general area where you are hunting.

thanks,

I'm just now starting back up shooting again after many, many years and have no hunting experience to speak of. I can only hunt non-game animals with my .45 airgun so I am kind of limited with it in what I can go after. I have no idea where to go around here that is close enough for me to bike to except for some really shot-up BLM land that is a ways out there.
I am going to have to start knocking on some farmers doors pretty soon and start advertising free pest-control. I bet there are a lot of coyote around here messing with livestock that I have the perfect cure for.

I live here in eugene and recently got a tip on where to shoot nutria & carp on the outskirts of town from a guy shooting his bow at the local archery shop. It might be worth checking out...pm me if you want to check it out some time.
