Scary Fish Stories
I thought a post about times a fish actually scared you would be fun here's my story: When I lived back east I used to fish with a friend in his alumium row boat for Northern Pike, well one time he couldn't make it so I went alone in my inflatable fishing raft. Well I hooked into a big one 40 inches or so and that fish pulled me around the lake for ten minutes I was so happy when I got it near the raft and pulled it in, I hadn;t thought about the rows of razor sharp teeth these fish have until he put a row of holes in the side of my raft he also took a nice bite out of my finger but I did make it back close to the bank,I only had to walk/swim out the last ten feet or so. Now maybe the fish didn't scare me but the deflating raft sure did .

Re: Scary Fish Stories
back when i was young and stupid, i lived in texas. (don't get me wrong - texas is a great place. however, with weather ten degrees hotter than what we've had lately lasting from april through september, i'm glad i live up here, at least i think so.)
anyway, i'd ride my bike down through varner state park with my pole and tackle box. i'd throw 'em all over the fence and cross over into columbia lakes, the upscale gated golf community. there were a few of the golf ponds on the backside where you could fish for bass without getting harassed by security or beaned in the head with a golf ball.
one day, i was fishing this smallish kidney shaped water hazard right up on the green. i was dragging a texas rigged plastic worm across the bottom looking for structure. i felt a tap and set the hook. two seconds later the largest fish i had ever actually seen alive and in person launched out of the water, twice. my heart was pounding in my mouth as the drag started to sing. i chased it around the pond so as to have as little line between it and me as possible. the hole time, golfers are playing through waving at me to get out of the way, me waving back at them to play anyway. i was not letting this fish go just because someone might knock me unconscious with an approach shot. i ended up standing on the bank for an hour watching my line draw figure eights in the water and finally managed to drag up a very large carp close enough to see that he was foul hooked in the tail (story of my life, folks). he'd had enough of me at this point and with a flick of his tail, he let me go.
i guess that was about as scared as i've ever been while fishing, at least so far. i haven't done buoy 10 in the fog yet, though.

Re: Scary Fish Stories
I have a Similar Story like yours, Instead of being in the lake I was 8 miles out in the ocean and was in a 10'2 Zodiac and had 9.9 mercury power behind us and caught a 3ft blue or some kind of reef shark. My friend said I can't get the hook out and I said hold the shark still so I ripped out the hook from his mouth and said to let him go slowly. Well, he let him go and I still had the hook in my hand, and started to hear the hiss sound as the shark has a barb on his tail and punctured a hole in one of the chambers. We looked at each other in shear terror and he thought I stuck the boat with the hook and I showed him it was still in my hand. We put our gear away as quickly as possible and I held on to the hole and BEE-LINED it back in. I kept my finger over the hole but bouncing all around I don't think that did a bit of good. The hole wasn't all that big and it took like 20-25 minutes to get us back in. We made it back and the chamber was just getting soft and was thankful for little things like making it back in safely.

Re: Scary Fish Stories
I grew up fishing for stripers and sturgeon in the Sacramento river delta in CA. We used to fish for stripers at night near Isleton CA in late Oct. early Nov. I was about 12, and my dad took me, and my best friend. My buddy and I hiked aways away from where my dad was, to a spot we thought looked good. I baited up, cast out, and waited for a bite.
About 20 min. later, my rod tip starts bouncing slightly, and I'm thinking "Alright, a striper!" I set the hook, and the fish felt very heavy. I was using some pretty stout gear, with the drag screwed down pretty tight. The bank we were standing on was a mixture of mud, rocks and tules. As I was fighting the fish that I thought was a world record striper, I got too close to the edge, and the bank gave way, and in the water I went. Here it is, about 11:30 at night, in early Nov. Even in central CA, it's pretty cold that time of year.
So here i am yelling to my buddy to get my dad, while refusing to let go of the pole, and try to climb out of the water. I started floating out with the tide current, and was getting really scared. My dad finally comes, and slides down the bank, tryin to grab ahold of me. I managed to grab his hand with my left, while still holding the rod in my right. Dad kept saying "Just let go of the pole, and climb out" but I wouldn't let go.
After about 10 minutes, dad finally helped me climb out on some rocks nearby, and I continued to fight the fish. It turned out to be a green sturgeon of about 6 feet in length. It was the biggest fish by far that I had caught up to that point. So looking back on it now, It's a fond memory, but that night I was pretty scared.

Re: Scary Fish Stories
Hey Good to the Last Cast,
You did bring that fish back to shore with you right? I mean who would let go of a trophy that big
I've had a few scares while fishing, usually not with the fish though. The only one that comes to mind right now was when I was fishing a local lake. I was baiting up my hook when an old Russian lady (not trying to be racist or sexist) swung back her rod without looking and tried to cast. Needless to say the hook ended up buried in my arm and she flung her whole rod into the water. I jumped up in pain and accidentallykicked her tackle box into the water. I got outta there right away before I got really ******. I'll try to think of a better one.
