Rippenlips and I were able to fish out of Hammond yesterday and boy was it a trip. We launched at 8:00 and in missing fisherman formation headed to the back side of sand Island put the crab pots down and then went to take a peak at the bar.
When we first got there there was a motor lifeboat at the jaws and a SH-60 hovering over by the south jetty. There were some BIG breakers down there also. The motor life boat left and we decided to take a peak. It was still a bit rough for our liking so we found some flat water and waited. At 9:00 we checked again and the ebb had died down considerably. Nice day out on the water 3-5 foot waves at 9 seconds.
Stopped short of the CR buoy and put lines in as we rigged. Just after we got the 3rd line in the water fish on! then a double. Action was fast and furious from then on. I don't think we went 5 minutes without a strike. For some reason the fish weren't sticking though. I have no idea how many fish I alone lost. There were also plenty of feeder kings and coho with adipose fins. I had one king that was probablly within an inch of 24 but didn't want to net him to measure so he went free. Even with me farming fish and all of the others that had to be released, we were done by 10:45 and I even got a nice 31" 16lb Nooker. every boat I spoke with had put limits in the hold. I don't know how long the quota is going to last with fishing like this.
On the crabbing front, 2 traps, 2 pulls apiece 15 crab. Mmmm.
