Brining herring firms them up and can also be used to add scents to your bait.....here is a brine that has worked very well for me at the mouth of the Nehelem....

1 gallon of distilled water ( don't use tap water as it contains chlorine)
1 cup kosure salt
1/2 cup skim powdered milk ( firms up the fish without burning them)
1 tablespoon of anise extract....... You can find extract at any store and it will mix better with the water then the oils
1-2 tablespoons of Mrs stewarts bluing.... also found at the store and will brighten up the herring for a better flash

If you get this brine done before you go to bed tonight it will be ready to use tomarrow when you fish. by the way blue label herring is my favorite size to use in the bay

Good luck and let me know how you did as I will be in the bay on Monday

A non-salmon fisher here but brining is to make the herring more firm thus to last longer on the hook? Ok now maybe the poor souls that actually fish for salmon will chime in.

I do and freeze 3-4 in plastic baggies so they stay fresh and don't lose their scales by being with to many others that may start to thaw in your cooler? Work one baggie at a time and keep others on blue ice. The frozen unused ones, I refreeze when I get home for next time if still frozen in cooler?

Works for me?

I don't think it would hurt? Some just use rock salt alone? The salt is the main ingredient for hardening.

For some reason people use powdered milk, I have used it and have seen no difference in the bait.

Just be shure to leave the brine and fish in the refrigreator so they wont get soft. and by the way has anyone tried borax in the mixture?

Do a quick search here Showing results 1 to 25 of 182
Search took 0.06 seconds. Search: Key Word(s): herring, brine

It will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about brining.

Good luck!
Have fun along the way?

After soaking them in the brine overnight,

--Should they be put in the freezer til next trip? (probably a week away)
and if so, placed side by side in a plastic bag. I like Retiredgal's idea of 3 at at time.
