Default Is your backup motor electric tilt?

Found a little flaw in my backup motor plan today. I left some things on for a couple days and drained my batteries completely. Can't start the main honda 150 so I went to rope start my T8...

Oh yeah, it is electric tilt and the batteries are dead. No problem, I'm sure there is a way to get it down. Couldn't find that in the manual. It wasn't obvious looking at it. Hugh at SS Marine Newport finally clued me in about the bypass screw under the tilt motor (underwater, feel for it!).

So, just passing on my boneheaded mistake. If you have a Yamaha T8 or another electric tilt you should familiarize yourself with the tilt bypass.

Oh yeah - and have a socket set on board for taking that plastic cover off the rope pulley for pull starting the T8. Arggg, should have known better.

House battery isolated from starting battery will help in these situations also.

Battery isolator and spare battery (charged but not connected to anything.) They don't push start worth a darn!

I left the switch on "both" so that the bilge pump would have all the power it could get - just in case. My boat is in a slip right now. So, I did this to myself. It was better to happen while in the slip than to work through it in the swell/wind.

Sorry to hear it. I have the same thing on the T25.
.
Btw if you are mooring your boat consider wiring the bilge pumps like they do on bigger boats.

Use a float switch and fuse and wire each pump directly to one of the batteries. This is in addition to the circuit for running the pumps with the dashboard switch. You can isolate the pumps by pulling fuses if a float fails. And the pumps will work if the float lifts .. whether the battery switch is on or off.

Pilar I think you should open a house calls boat doctor business with a base shop somewhere. You would have my business.

Of course hours of operation would be based on where the fish were and weather.

Sorry i have not caught up with you again since the JUNA TUNA weekend. Have heard you a couple of times on the radio.

SamBen is down right now getting a valve job. Should be back on the water by the 17th.

does anyone had a picture or specifics of the two battery setup. i was thinking of doing that very thing to my boat. my kicker is a two stroke and doesnt charge the battery so i always get a little nervouse leaving the electronics on while trolling....mainly when in the ocean. i could make it to the marina no prob with kicker in bay and rivers but dont want to try it from the ocean.
thanks

Two baterys and a Pergo switch, has kept me running. All motors and electronics are wired to the starter batery, with a fully charged deep cycle as back up. If some one forgets to turn something off in the boat. At least You get to fish another day. It is the simplest things that can cut a trip short.
