Snoopy Rod Classic
Ok, I just had to show off and brag a bit.
I took 3rd place with this hatchery fish in the Snoopy Rod Classic. (You can read about it on Piscatorial Pursuits, if interested in the Snoopy Rod Classic).
As rods go, that good old Mickey Mouse rod did just fine.
Hey TH, care to make us up some TH Custom Snoopy Rods for next year???

I really want to do that someday. Is that by invitation only? It just looks like so much fun.

Most excellent! How'd that rod perform?
How much backing is on the reel?

Re: Snoopy Rod Classic
That is way cool. I might just have to build one of those for a couple of granchildren.
This reminds me of the time me and a friend (Fishin Magician) were on the Nehalem bobber fishing and this little girl caught a 12-15 pound chromer on her snoopy rod. It was classic. You should have heard that reel scream
Cool Post!

Nice job Parker. It takes a real man to catch a steelie on a snoopy rod.

Re: Snoopy Rod Classic
Way!
We were limited to using 8lb test on the Snoopy Rods.
I was amazed at how well the Mickey Mouse rod held up.
Now, the reel, on the other hand, is a whole different ball game.
Just trying to get the reel to cast and retrieve is a big battle. Toss on a fish, and try working with the "drag". Heh. I did a lot of "high sticking", cranking on the reel handle, and walking backwards up the bank to land that fish!
The looks on all the bankies faces was priceless once I landed that fish. Half were laughing and half were crying because they were being outfished by a Snoopy Rod!

Re: Snoopy Rod Classic
Here's what I can tell you about the ground rules to the SRC.
-It's by invite only.
-There is an entrance fee.
-There is a prize for 1st and 2nd place, including a split of the entrance fee, a trophy, and a cool green Mickey Mouse sweater.
-There is total chaos when a fish is hooked.
Now, on to the rulez:
-Snoopy Rods only. Rods that are longer than, or do not fall under the Snoop Rod catagory may be disqualified by the SRC judge(s) at any time.
-No other rods or reels are even allowed during the SRC. Leave the "reel" gear at home.
-SRC judges have final say. It's recommended to pay them off so you're not disqualified.
-Limited to 8lb main line (mono) and leader.
-You are allowed to net another persons fish. Yes, read that for what it is worth. Imagine 4 boats fighting to net a fish! It usually pays to have multiple people in your boat - one to net, and the other to fight off the hoards as they try to battle you for that fish! The SRC is not for the faint of heart, or who doesn't mind getting clubbed with an oar/net.
-Biggest hatchery fish wins 1st place. Next biggest hatchery fish wins 2nd, unless a native fish is caught, verified, and measured. Biggest native fish takes 2nd prize and splits the pot with 1st place winner. (That is what happened to me. My 2nd place hatchery fish got bumped out by a native fish).
-1st place winner buys 1 round at the get-together dinner afterwards.
-All the rods are gathered up and donated to a local charity after the event.
-Spudguns, paintballs, flaming marshmellows, and fireworks are encouraged and recommended.
Some rules I'd change, or add in:
-You can net someone's fish, but you can not grab their line in doing so.
-All participants should buy/get a high-viz, or similar dorky hat. Makes it easy to see who is and who is not in the tournament.
-Snoopy rods only. These are the short 1-piece rods, usually with some cartoon character on them. No more of the 2 piece zebco "kiddie" rods and reels. Heck, some of the reels this year probably cost $20! Dang fancy gear!

Re: Snoopy Rod Classic
Parker,
Thanks for the info. Should we assume that participants were all limited to the same river?
Ifishers, let's plan this. What do you think about the end of January on either the Clack or Sandy?
Check-in / Weigh in at Riverside for the Clack, or Oxbow on the Sandy?
Throw out your ideas and let's see if we can make it happen.
Mike

Re: Snoopy Rod Classic
Yes, judes can fish.
Yeah, it has to be on the same river...or even better, same float. Everyone launches at the same time.
Even though the SRC was a little late this year, it's been timed so that mostly hatchery fish are caught. We really do try to keep the impact low on wild fish. I don't know the run timing down there, but I'd do it at the peak of the brat season...which is probably over by now on most rivers.
Maybe plan for something next year?

This is the best idea I have ever seen. Creativity on the river always gets a thumbs up from me! I would love to get in on one of these... or get one going down here in Oregon. ANyone out there game to boondoggle for Siletz fish on these
I wonder of grant or Scott would let me bring one in their boat?

Re: Snoopy Rod Classic
hahahah that is awesome.....
it reminded me of something we do at home.... we are alowed to use as many rods as we want, but it is too expensive to have 20 rods and reels(some people do  ) so what we do is .... we take a coke bottle(one of those glass ones from the christmas comercials with the bears  ) and we put about 50-60 yards of 20# test line on it. when you want to cast you hold the bottle in one hand and you start spining the weight(attatched to the end of the line) with the other... then you let go of the weight and you point the top of the bottle forward, so the line can come off it freely...(works like a spining reel )
too bad we can't do this here. its so much fun especially when 3 or 4 of those bottles get a bite... then it gets crazy because you can't "reel" very quickly
great post!!!

Ok, I shot you an email TH.
Colors? What colors? Uh oh, now I have to make a decision! Ugh!
Just let me know when you'll be up this way to fish with TRBO, and I'm there (if the other seat is open). Hopefully, we can get you on the Hoh, and toss some pink coneheads for some big nates!

Great job Parker
Too bad your fish got bumped. Sounds like a lot of fun though I'm not sure the "real" combat fishing is too fun. Custom made snoopy rods by TH would not be legal, too high tech.

I want to do that!
Let's do an ifish one for springers. Can you imagine a springer on a snoopy rod?
Better not, I guess, cuz of natives, but....
OK, steelhead!
I dunno. Maybe trout?

I have thought it would be fun to show up at the Hatchery Hole with one of these or a Popeil (Sp) Pocket fisherman and try to put on a clinic.

Re: Snoopy Rod Classic
I got that fish on a pearl pinky corky and sand shrimp tail. I almost never use yarn. No need to. Straight drift fishing. A 30" leader and a 2/0 Vision Hook. I punched a hole in a piece of lead and put it directly on the Vision swivel. Easy as pie.
You'd be surprised at how well you can feell the bite on a Snoopy Rod.
Some of other boats cheated and used plugs. We will ban those for next year. Where's the fun in that, or bait divers? Booooring.....
Jennie - no, you really don't want to go springer fishing with a Snoopy rod. You could probably do it, but you'd have to cheat and put 30lb PowerPro on your reel...or some other braided line. Actually, with the way the reels work, I don't know if braided would even work. I bet it would snap pretty easily from wear and tear of the reel. If you follow the rules, I don't think you'd land too many springers on 8lb main and mono.
