Default Barnacle Bill or Day Sailor?

Here's a survey to find out what kind of boater you are. After you post your responses, I'll post the answers in a few days.

1)It's time for the one day tastee fish season on the big blue lake, tomorrow. You check out NOAA.gov for the weather forecast for tomorrow and get the following. NW swells, 4 ft, seas 3 ft, NW wind 10 kts, becoming SW at 25 kts later in the day. There is no advisory or warning posted yet. Tastee fish is found 10 miles to the NW of where you will launch.

You
A) Bag it and go fish for IKE.
B) Gas up and head for the beach, you can fish early, beat the approaching front and will fish no matter what.
C) Go to the beach with your boat and camp with a wait and see attitude about the weather.
D) Get your buddy on the phone and talk him into taking his big heavy fiberglass boat instead of your jetsled.

2) You head out on a bottom fishing trip. As you approach the bar things begin to go wrong with your boat. The bilge pump fails to operate and your radio check is unsuccessful. Back at the ramp, the boat was real hard to start, you used 1/2 a can of starting fluid. Maybe it's the old gas.

You
A) Turn around and resign yourself to some overdue boat repairs.
B) Turn the radio off, find the hand bailer and head for the reef.
C) Fish in the bay and leave the motor running all day.
D) Check to see that the cell phone works, just in case, and go bottom fishing anyway.

3) You just caught a beauty salmon and he's next to the boat. You have to release all unclipped fish but they always shake you off next to the boat before you can net them. Dang barbless hooks anyway!

You
A) Quickly net that bad boy and hope it's missing the adipose fin.
B) Look for the fin in the water and let the fish shake off when you find it has one.
C) Gaff em', you can't miss and the crabs will eat the dead native when you toss him back.
D) Use cotton gloves, tail the fish and carefully remove the hook if it is wild.

4) You are at the river spot of your choice and cruising along minding your own business. Suddenly a pack of PWC's bear down on you and want to jump your wake.

You
A) Speed up and try to run them down.
B) Initiate evasive manouevers and try to dodge em.
C) Slow down to no wake speed, smile and wave.
D) Break out the flare gun and fire at will.

5) You are at the boat ramp and there is a guy and his wife launching, its real crowded. He's in the boat and she is backing it in. After several tries the truck stalls repeatedly and rolls back a few more feet each time. The water is up to the doors and the guy in the boat is driving to the dock.

You
A) Have a good laugh and swill some more barley pop.
B) Break out the camera and take pictures.
C) Run down the ramp and wade in to help.
D) Yawn and go back to sleep, your turn is coming soon enough.

6) You are running up the Multnomah channel to the Springer spot and there are several bass boats working the pilings in a narrow area. You are late and in a hurry to get there. You will have to drive right through them to get there.

You
A) Drive on at full speed and wave as you go by.
B) Come off plane and maintain course.
C) Slow to no wake speed and try to give them a wide berth.
D) Sound 5 short blasts on your horn.

7) It's winter time and foggy almost every day, you really want to fish. Your wife buys you a GPS and you want to break it in on a Sturgeon run the next day at dawn. Never used one before but you can learn. Your bud Pilar gives you coordinates for a route from 42nd St. to Kelley Point. The next day comes and its foggy again.

You
A) Bring the GPS manual and hope for the best.
B) Wait till the fog burns off and practice the use of your new toy.
C) Get an experienced GPS user to give you a short course.
D) Put the GPS in your tackle box, you'll never use it anyway.

8) On a fishing trip on the Columbia river you spot a boat in trouble. They are having problems with the anchor rope fouled in the prop. They wave you down.

You
A) Slow down approach carefully and offer help. You note the number of passengers and description of the boat and contact the Coast Guard on VHF 16.
B) Alter course to miss them but maintain speed.
C) Fire a flare and call in the Coast Guard.
D) Approach from the stern and cut the rope before they sink.

9) You are approaching Garibaldi harbor and see the posted 5mph no wake bouys.

You
A) Stay on plane and look for law enforcement vessels. They are not there so you skirt the bouys and proceed into the harbor at full speed until you get to the ramp.
B) You slow to 5mph and your overloaded boat makes a wake anyway when the bow comes up.
C) You slow to no wake speed and prepare to trailer your boat.
D) Let your mate drive because she does better at slow speeds.

10) You have a new power plant installed in your boat. The rebuild guy tells you the redline is 5500 RPM.

This means
A) You can run that fast all day, no worries.
B) 3600 RPM cruise is about 65% of redline.
C) 5500 RPM is for the break in after that it's no holds barred.
D) You don't know.

Bonus - You leave the marina on a fishing trip. The yellow bar light is flashing and there is an red square flag with a black square in the middle flying at the Coast Guard shack.

This means
A) Storm warning, extreme conditions. The bar is closed and high winds are expected or exist.
B) Its inspection day and the Coast Guard is boarding and checking for safety equipment.
C) The tide is high.
D) The bar is open proceed with caution.

Have fun. I read a similar survey in 'Boating' magazine and made up my own for entertainment purposes. Their survey seemed aimed at much larger boats than what is typical of Ifishers.

Today is the highlight of the river patrols year. More people who have no business driving a boat come out to play and get in trouble than at any other time.

Please be careful and know the difference between what you know and what you think you know.

A good guide on boating for Oregon fish chasers is "Boating in Oregon Coastal Waters", published by the Oregon State Marine Board. The other is "Boating Safety", from the US Coast Guard.

Nice quiz Pilar,

Hey Hook, you got a wooden leg or what? 30 makes the cut. I guess only the guys who knew the answers posted. We got enough now to crew a pirate ship.

Pass the grog, arrrrggghhhh.

Whoo hooo! 27, you made the cut. Hey dude I got some expired flares, Yon't to? Personally I prefer the Standard Missile II for PWC's. Flares are just noise and smoke, pure intimidation. Welcome aboard.

Ol' Buddy ol' Pal,

You already know I'm a barfnical Billie

I just can't pass this one up though so here goes...

1, Hmmm, I think we did c, followed by lets see what the heck Pilar or Puffin is gonna do and go from there....

2, A, unless I'm with Dan!. In that case it's business as usual and we just go fishing. There's still 1/2 a can left after all and it would be a shame to waste it .

3, D, I've already seen what a guy can do to **** off a heavy fish with a gaff . Put on a glove and dip in fer a good time .

4, C, Unless it's after the three beer breakfast. Then it would be a good time to accadently dump all those pesky short ropes and plastic bags....

5, C, I like a good wet t-shirt contest .

6, D, then A... Naw. I'd opt fer C and get a good look at what they were using and crowd in and show them how it's done.

7, None of the above, I'd put it in my back pack fer safe keeping! You know I just couldn't resist that one . Well, guess I'll fess up... B.

8, Either A, or.... Go down stream and wait for X-mas.... Naw, A and try to calm them down till the short pro's get there.

9, C, Duh... If I'm with Dan! we always coast in cause we're out of gas.

10, B. But I don't think Dan!'s boat will have to worry about it. He only gets the RPM's up that high when it starts...

Bonus, A And, it also means get ready to listen to stories of Puffin out slayin' at Atlantis...

In all seriousness this is a nice lil' quizz you posted. You must be too busy or too bored to go fishing.

Are ya interested in going out next week?

yaont to?

You get a 32. I guess you were paying attention at Halibut hill. Consider getting a parrot. I'm going to Garibaldi Sat, Sun, Mon. Saultee Dawg!!@

Silvers are good!

Ok I graded the responses I got and we have enough to crew a raiding party on the offshore net boats. Anyone speak Tagalog or Japanese? Well steal the Blueback and sail at dawn.

1) a-3, b-0, c-2, d-1
2) a-3, b-1, c-2, d-0
3) a-1, b-2, c-0, d-3
4) a-1, b-2, c-3, d-0
5) a-0, b-1, c-3, d-2
6) a-1, b-2, c-3, d-0
7) a-1, b-3, c-2, d-0
8) a-3, b-0, c-1, d-2
9) a-0, b-2, c-3, d-1
10) a-0, b-3, c-0, d-2
Bonus a-3, b-0, c-0, d-0

Yeah, I know some of the answers are pretty obvious but I figure there are various degrees of screwing up.

Raw recruit - If you got 0 to 7, you need some time on the water under careful supervision. The US Navy has a 3 hots and a cot for you.

Sea pup - If you got 8 to 14 there is hope but keep learning. You'll get there unless Darwin takes a special interest in you.

Experienced seaman - If you got 15 to 25 you probably have a lot of fun but are still learning. Oh well someone has to buy the fish cops gas and boat repairs.

Destined for greatness - 26 and better, well you know the deal. Everyone who stepped up and showed their big brass ones got this score. Share what you know with the pups and recruits and make the water more fun for all of us.

Hyman Rickover always claimed that he was not God but was qualified to stand the watch. Was he full of himself or what?

Thanks for playing, peace, out.
