Not fishing, computers... love em or hate em?
After overdosing on Microsoft NT recently I decided to see how many other Ifishers are involved in a trade that features computers.
In a way this is fishing related since we all 'Ifish' with old Bill gates looking over our shoulders. So here's my $0.02.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Windows NT stands for 'Not Today'.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
definitions
Computer program
Noun -- A thing which converts useful inputs into useless, uninformative error messages.
Programming
Verb -- To do something a lot like beating your head against a brick wall with fewer opportunities for reward.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A joke
Boris Yeltsin, Bill Gates and Bill Clinton all have the same dream at the same time. Not really a dream but a vision ....
The almighty appears to them in lights and booming voice and says "THE WORLD WILL END IN THREE DAYS, GO TELL YOUR PEOPLE TO REPENT!"
The next night Bill Clinton gets on the TV with a special nationwide broadcast. He says 'Folks, I got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the wascally wepublicans will never prosecute me for Whitewater. The bad news is that the world is ending in two days.'
At the same time, in Russia, the proletariat are gathered around the display TV's at the hard currency and black market electronics shops. Some are listening on radios. Boris Yeltsin makes a speech. 'My people, I have bad news and worse news. The bad news is the world will end in two days. The worse news is that there is a GOD.'
Meanwhile at the campuses of Microsoft, Bill Gates is having a teleconference with all of the employees at all of the places in his far flung empire. He speaks 'My Employees, I must tell you something. I have good news and great news. The good news is that GOD considers me to be one of the 3 most important men in the world. The great news is that we will never have to fix windows 95!'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I work on computerized control systems and use computers every day at work. It's definitely a Love/Hate relationship. I love the challenge but hate they the way they can waste so much of your time. Quality fishing time that is. If not for IFISH, I wouldn't touch the blasted things at home.
What about y'all?

I too am involved in the computer business. Working for one of the large companys that sell and maintain corporate systems. Yes peeler(Pilar) nt is a dog. I also don't spend much time on the home computer other than Ifish. After 8 hours of computers at work who wants to spend the evening on them. Hey Pilar when we going fishing? I'm a professional digital graphics dude and webslinger, 12+ hours a day, every day that I'm not telecommuting as a writer.
Man, it's great to be in business for one's self.
Sometimes I actually get to go fishing!

Re: Not fishing, computers... love em or hate em?
I work as "Information Systems Coordinator," meaning I am the guy who tells the boneheads, er I mean "users", to restart their computers when they get scrambled. Or else I go stand behind them so they push the right buttons and surprise it works fine. That sort of thing.
If the world used Macs, I would have to get a real job - thanks Mr. Gates!
I try not to look at the home computer too often & still holding out on the broadband Internet stuff, I'm CHEAP

Re: Not fishing, computers... love em or hate em?
i do computer support for a large bank in portland and would agree that NT is a dog. the 'blue screen of death' visits us on a regular basis. i was running win98 on my desktop at home which wasn't too bad but recently upgraded to windows 2000. it's surprisingly stable although finding drivers for things can be a little difficult. i've also got a windows 2000 server in my house hosting data and whatnot. it's not too bad either.
i keep a browser window open at work just for ifish so i can dream about fishing while wasting my time working. also, lot's of good tips and info here so that maybe one day soon i'll catch another fish. i have at least two dozen trips logged since my last fish back in february and it's getting a little depressing. the wife is going to start thinking that i'm not really out fishing when i go out if i don't get a fish soon.

Re: Not fishing, computers... love em or hate em?
I work as a television producer/editor here in Seattle. My previous gig was corporate media (digital video, graphics, animation etc...) We used Mac's mainly at first, because all of the best software was written for them. System 7 had to be the most unstable piece of crap operating system ever designed IMHO. Don't get me wrong, I love the Mac interface, But after AVID, Softimage, and Adobe After effects came out on NT, We made the big transition. Right now I'm using NT 4.0 servicepack 6, on a Pentium 3 650mhz with 500 megs of RAM, and it operates almost flawlessly for my needs. Someday everything will be available for UNIX, but until then, NT does the job for me just fine.

Re: Not fishing, computers... love em or hate em?
I don't know if I want to admit this on here as names are already being flung , but I am a computer hardware engineer. I work for IBM in Beaverton. I am currently working on the "big guns": big multiprocessor systems (between 4 and 64 processors) based on SMP configurations (using a NUMA architecture) and using Intel processors.
And yes, even at IBM we use Windows for our desktops and yes, it blows goats.

Re: Not fishing, computers... love em or hate em?
Any product developed by the "evil" Empire (Microsuck) is junk! When it does run, It fights with other software and always needs patches. Unfortunately, for some niches (particularly AutoCAD) they are the only game in town.
I develop computer simulation models (hydrodynamic and Water Quality) of actual river systems (river/estuary/bay). I have TWO frigin computers on my desk. One is a dual 1000 MHz and the other is a SUN (UNIX) workstation. I was using NT but my new machine came with 2000 so I am still judging it for myself. The SUN is the most reliable machine around with very little overhead to bog it down, just sheer raw power, I call it old faithfull. It always works and never complains. At home I have a MAC but I never even turn it on anymore. I rarely even touch a computer on my time off.
