How much meat on a tuna
Hey everyone.
I'm a newbie here on ifish and I have a question.
How much of a Tuna's weight is actually edible tuna? 25%, 40%, 50%?
Can someone help me out?

About 50% yield.

Re: How much meat on a tuna
Its 100% edible, but don't overdose on the bile bladders. The white meat is about 40% with average filleting skills.

Re: How much meat on a tuna
A 20lb Tuna gave me 7lbs of loins = 35% yield
Carking skill are a factor.

Obviously.
If you aren't getting close to 50%, your wasting fish, and that's just wrong.

Woody....I agree! A 25# fish should yield about 7 pints.

Re: How much meat on a tuna
I would think a 50% yield means you are taking the belly meat. For those that are looking for extra belly meat you can have mine.

Re: How much meat on a tuna
Over 50% with the bellies, less than 50% without.

Re: How much meat on a tuna
I tried smoking the bellies as suggested on this site, maybe I didn't do it right, but man is that an oily mess! Bellies are a little too fatty for me..................
Maybe crab like smoked fish too??

Re: How much meat on a tuna
I smoke the bellies just long enough for them to slide off the skin them drop them on top of a loaded pint jar...NOW THATS FLAVOR! the higher the fat content of the meat the longer you will have to smoke it.

Pacific seafood has a site that gives estimated yeilds on a bunch of different fish.

Re: How much meat on a tuna
I was curious a few weeks back so I weighed a fish and then cleaned it. Gutted and gilled it was 19lbs and with the bellies I ended up with 10 lbs of meat. Around 50% with better than average cleaning skills.

Re: How much meat on a tuna
They need to check their data & edit their page. I'm pretty sure from what I saw at sea long line fish average much larger than the 5lbs. stated. The japanese & other LL operations target fish that are more like 50 lbs.

Interesting first question, Pipe Dreamer. Why do you ask?

I'm sure it's a typo and they meant 50lbs.

Re: How much meat on a tuna
Carking is the key! I know when I have 50 fish, my carking gets a bit sloppy compared to 20 fish.
I average 50% yield. If you leave your fish on ice for a long time, it drops a little. I think because the tuna loses some moisture. I've noticed fish that I canned ASAP has more moisture in the jar compared to the ones who were on ice for 1-2 days. Not a lot, but noticeable.
My 2 cents...

Indeed.
I'm fishing on Monday with Maverick and I've been going through numbers in my head and wondering about how much albie I might be bringing home. Looks pretty good.
I'm relatively new to the NW from the South so I've never fished for Tuna before. I'm pretty excited as the weather appears to be cooperating at this point
Wish me luck.
