Marine Reserve Auto Response Ready
RFA National has an auto response feature ready for use. It is specific to Marine Reserves in Oregon State waters. It was put together by RFA West Coast Regional Director, Jim Martin for our benefit. Once you enter your zip code where you are registered to vote it will send your emails automatically to the governor, congressional senators/rep, and state legislature senator/rep.
It also has a 'notify a friend feature' which can help inform others as to what they can do to join in on the fun.
It has been about a month since the last round of letters went out so it is about time to do it again.

Enjoy and help preserve your right to fish sustainably.

Re: Marine Reserve Auto Response Ready
Got this from Arnie Roblan.
Dear Mr. Mast,
Representative Roblan read your e-mail with great interest and asked me
to respond on his behalf. Rep. Roblan strongly advises that you make
sure your voice is heard when public hearings are held. It is important
that the Governor and his staff hear from--and listen to--residents of
the Oregon coast.
Arnie also wanted you to know that he is also cautious by nature and
believes that the best course of action here is to go slow, to
thoroughly investigate the scientific research, and to listen carefully
to concerned citizens and coastal residents.
Thank you for writing to our office and for your active engagement in
the affairs affecting our region and our state.
Gina Sutherland
Legislative Assistant
State Representative Arnie Roblan

Re: Marine Reserve Auto Response Ready
As I am now in Illinois I have no impact on this issue, unfortunately. Please, all that care about fishing and coastal economies, make your views known! There is little good that has aqured from the California disaster of reserves and fish management. I am not anti-green BUT, like PETA, they can get very enotive and throw the baby out with the bath water. NOon reserve closures in Oregon. Manage the problems and don't grasp onto illogical and emotionally driven "solutions" that don't even address any specific issues!

Re: Marine Reserve Auto Response Ready
How about a more descriptive title? I personally skipped this not getting the drift from the title. Automatic response letter against marine reserves.

Re: Marine Reserve Auto Response Ready
Yes, I read Marine Reserves and thought Military each time I've seen it in a title. A conditioned response as my brother in law is military.

Re: Marine Reserve Auto Response Ready
Done... thanks for the post... It really amazes me how our lovely Gov seems to like to kill Oregon families... jacks corp taxes and pushes some long time Oregon business out of the state, sometimes as close as move to WA.... other times he kills logging which has a exponentially benefit to the state, he puts the kibosh on fishing community by halting the season... As Ive heard many times, soon Oregon will be a big ole national park, where you cant log, nor fish, nor have any time of family activities involving the lands/seas

Re: Marine Reserve Auto Response Ready
I sent off a letter a couple of weeks ago. I just received the below reply from David Wu. Can you say "double speak"?
You can bet that I'll be following up with my Congressman Wu. Thing is that I respect his position in many other areas. On this matter, I think he's been drinking the Kool-aid.
Dear Ms. Johnston:
Thank you for writing to express your concern over fishery management. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.
We cannot ignore the health of our oceans and the massive economic sector that is fishing in the northwest. We cannot play politics with the future health of our oceans. I firmly believe that policy makers must work together to represent the variety of interests and complexities that govern the ecosystems in the oceans. Decisions on allocations and ocean management must be based on sustainability and sound science. As I serve in Congress I will continue to look for sound policies that protect our oceans and fish in a way that best serves all parties involved.
While I do encourage the state of Oregon to pursue sound fishery management policies, as a member of Congress my role at the state level is limited to encouraging the state to make the right decisions. I have worked with the state on matters of state and federal concern with regard to our oceans, and I believe that Governor Kulongoski is trying to enact the best polices available.
You may be interested in H.R. 234, the Pacific Salmon Emergency Disaster Assistance Act of 2007. H.R. 234 was introduced by Representative Mike Thompson (CA) on January 4, 2007. I am a cosponsor of this legislation, which was incorporated into H.R. 2206, the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Care, Katrina Recovery, and Iraq Accountability Appropriations Act of 2007 that became law on May 25, 2007. This legislation provides funds for the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission to distribute to entities that were negatively affected by the failures in regards to the Klamath River Fall Chinook salmon in 2006. As a fisherman I appreciate the need for sustainable fisheries and as a member of Congress representing portions of the Columbia River and the Oregon coast, I understand the critical role fishing plays with regard to our economy.
Thank you again for sharing your views on fishery management. If you have further comments or questions, please contact me at 503-326-2901 or 800-422-4003. You may also sign up to receive regular email updates from me at www.house.gov/wu/.
With warm regards,

David Wu

Yeah, I sent him a response suggesting he speak directly with Patty Burke to understand how the regulations are already creating de facto marine reserves. I also suggested 'legacy' is not necessarily a positive term and that he not allow 'legislation for legislation's sake' be his legacy. Of course I also mentioned that he can count on losing support from me and thousands of other sport fishers, charter operators and commercial fishermen if he supports this nonsense.
That's the short, non-PC version.

Re: Marine Reserve Auto Response Ready
Got a reply from Jean Cowan today via email. Fairly non-committal in her reply IMO
================================================
Nancy,
Thanks for taking the time to copy me on your e-mail to Governor Kulongoski regarding marine reserves. I appreciate your input on this issue, as I share many of your concerns.
I have been working closely with our coastal legislators on an effort to work together with the Governor's office and the Ocean Policy Advisory Council on this issue. It is our intent to make sure that coastal communities are fully represented on any discussions on marine reserves and wave energy development. I want to make sure that any efforts in these two areas are fully evaluated with input from our coastal communities.
Please continue to send me your thoughts on this issue or other state issues. I appreciate hearing from constituents in the district.
Take care,
Jean
