Default Does ODFW sell your information?

Yesterday I received in the mail a post card congratulating me on being successful in drawing a Pronghorn tag and it was an advertisement for a taxidermist. Well that’s all well and good but I wonder how this person found out my name and address. With all the ID thefts going on this makes me a bit nervous. Is our personal information public record or does the Oregon Fish and Wildlife sell our information? Either way it needs to stop. What’s everyone’s thought on this?

I know that ODFW gives out certain information to interested parties. I belive the they give out information on all trappers license holders to the organizers of the fur sales. I have not found any of the mail or information that I have recieved to be negative or offensive. Most of it was a help.

There was a thread on this within the last couple of months.
If the govt collects information on you, it becomes public.

Here is the thread.

So wow. Why isnt the director of Oregon Fish and Wildlife's home address posted on the web site? He is a Public Employee. I should have the right to that then  Crazy stuff. Can't wait for the first person to get ther ID stolen and it's traced back to the Fish and Wildlife information. :lurk:

Of course they do! It's all public record. Manufactures buy it, service providers buy it, Non-Profit's buys it, AND YOU CAN BET PETA BUYS IT TOO!

And its not just hunting & fishing related. When my daughter was born 6 1/2 years ago, we ended up staying in the hospital for a week. When we finally got home....MY DAUGHTER had mail waiting for her with coupons for diapers and formula.... When she was born, her info bacame a public record to the city, state & county...one of them sold her public record!

Kind of spooky when you think about it....big brother is watching and so are others!!!!

There are several taxidermists in the state who buy the controlled hunts list each year, myself included, I have sent postcards to antelope and sheep tag winners for several years now.
All tag sales are a matter of public record and available for the asking by anyone; the state charges a small fee for processing the request and delivering it to those who want it.
I am certain that if abuse is reported they have the right to deny further requests; but would you really like those lists to be secret?
All that is included in the listings are hunt numbers where you received your tag and your name, address and phone number.
You would need more than that for ID theft.
Personally, I don't see the reason for phone numbers, but this year they helped me locate 2 hunters who moved without letting me know!
I was about to sell their mounts when I discovered their new addresses and phone numbers in the information I received.
Both were happy to get their mounts; they were beginning to think I ran off with them; it never occurred to them to call me with the info when they moved last winter!
These mailings are an important part of my advertising each year; they let me contact directly people who might be interested in my services.
If you are not interested, then file it with the rest of your junk mail!

It is available upon request. I have utilized it in the past in my profession (wildland fire) to make fire prevention contacts. Basically sending letters to successful hunters reminding them to be careful with fire and informing them of current restrictions in place.

Its Public record, there is no need to buy or sell it. Your info to a degree is available to anyone when you make a transaction with a public entity. Most agencies make it very hard to find it, unless it is a "harmless" request.

Me too. I was actually glad, now I know where there will be a cooler. ODFW will provide, under law, a list of everyone who draws tags. They don't charge more than the cost to do so.

Well it is free, but only after a period of time passes and for most businesses, they want a relevant, up to date, and targeted list. While it is a "public record" most agencies make it hard to find, collect and sort that data on your own. However for a small transaction fee, you can have that information NOW and in a format that is easily imported into a contact management system or database. That's why most business just buy the list, therefore saving their time to focus on their core skills or business issues.

I guess I can't speek for all public agencies but the one I work for cannot and will not give out any info about another person. I agree with others, if thats being done than thats completely wrong.

Technology is a double edge for sure. You want invasive....type in your's or your buddies address into Zillow.com. Great tool to find house values, but now you can see exactly the sales price, appreciation, taxes and PHOTOS of anybody's house.....boss, neighbor...whoever! Let's all hope I am not out buck neked in the hot tub when the satellite goes over:grin:

If they know you drew a tag for a 7 day hunt from 10/3/07 through 10/10/07 they could stop by while your away hunting. The state should not be selling my info to anyone. Taxidermist said he got phone numbers too. I don't remember having to provide my number when I bought my tag.

The phone number is optional on your application; if you put it on there it will be in the database.
