Greetings!
Been lurking for awhile, and decided to join....y'all seem like a bunch of top-notch folks!
While I'm relatively new to the PNW, I've been fishing for the longfin for many, many years out of San Diego; it's great to know that there are others affected by this most terrible ailment!
Back in SD, I used to participate in a board -www-buddyboaters.com
Very much like this section, with a lot of discussion about who/what/where/why/when/how. Lots of sharing of numbers, conditions, tackle used, etc.
Just picked up a new (to me) boat- a 2002 Trophy 2359, 5.0 MPI with the Bravo 3 dual prop setup, fully rigged with electronics, downriggers, and such. I'll be asking for advice about fishing for salmon, and am always ready to help out with tuna advice.....
Who's going Friday? We'll be leaving Westport about 0600 or so- what time does the bait receiver open?

Re: Greetings!
Welcome to the Salty Dogs. I'm sure you'll find this to be a great bunch of dawgs. One thing that is custom for new people here is to tell a fishing story so we can get to know you a little bit.

OK, story time...
Ever had one of those days when you can smell Murphy making your life hell? Well, this was one...called my bud from the Navy, who had caught nothing larger than a trout all his life. We launch out of San Diego, and he ends up with a 30# class yellowtail!
All the way home, all I hear is how expensive the trip is, how he only caught one fish, etc.; my mental rolodex is filing him under "never invite again".
The next week, longfins and exotics break wide open!! I call my parents, my usual buddies, the mailman; nobody can go. I finally call Bruce (Navy buddy), and convince him he ought to go. Then, Murphy shows up: - Left the keys at the house, and had to turn around.
- Forgot to fill the boat's fuel tank- another delay.
- Can't get the boat started at the ramp.
- Bait tank won't fill.
In short, we were supposed to launch at 0230, and be on the grounds at 0600. We launched at 0545
I figure the day is ruined, as there's no way we'll be able to get close to our desired destination in any decent time. So, we're putting out about 10 or so miles from Point Loma when I notice a small surface boil (about the size of a trash can lid)....I decide that, since the day is lost anyway, it can't hurt to throw the gear in and see what happens...
4 hours later, we had over 20 albies on ice, blood on everything, and 2 exhausted but happy guys...as the icing on the cake, we headed west about 15 miles, found a kelp paddy the size of a small car, and pulled a few dodos from it
Not bad- we burned less than 30 gallons, plugged the boat, and gave Murphy a good ass kickin'

Re: Greetings!
Great story. You made a great day out of a bad start.
Bet Bruce didn't complain about the cost either?
Welcome to our group.

At first, he made mention of the costs again (on my boats, everybody splits costs for fuel, bait, etc), and I was in mental torment wondering "Why did I invite this wanker again?"....
After we got home, and we were 3 hours into cutting and packing fish, his tune was a bit different:grin:
Thanks for the welcome!

Re: Greetings!
Welcome aboard Pete! Fairly new myself, this is a great group to be a part of. I cut my teeth on saltwater fishing down in SD myself, launching from Shelter Island. Lots of good times, and pictures from the Marlin Club!
Keep em' tight,
Richard (Tia Maria)

Re: Greetings!
Welcome. I also lived in SD a while ago. I worked on the La Jollan for George Foster out of Pt. Loma Sportfishing many years ago. Enjoy the NW salmon & steelhead fishing.

Re: Greetings!
Welcome aboard..sounds like you found a fish killin machine, and only 100 hours on it.
Story goes to show you just never know. A couple of weeks ago on my first Oregon tuna venture we dropped the lines mostly because it was just too rough for my young crewman (7 years old). Who knew you could find longfins in 400 feet of water, and certainly not ugly green stuff with no sign of life anywhere, but 10 minutes later the reel is singing. Off SD we'd never put them in without clean deep blue water, or dolphins, or birds, or a temp break, or something to indicate fish.
www.sandiegofishing.com/buddydb is still my homepage but it's time to change to Ifish.net.
