Re: got fog??
Did it many times well before GPS was available for sport boat use, even went all the way to Three Arch Rocks, & back a few times in the Fog with no trouble, using just a Compass, & Depth Finder, Out of the Columbia also to the Sturgeon grounds, & then across the bar for Salmon, in the Fog, no troubles then either. However I can't imagine why anybody would choose to not have a GPS with them when they are so affordable & avilable these days.

GPS is good. Radar is even better.

Re: got fog??
Now I should mention my Wife Charlotte, her son Zeke(The Apprentice), her Son Patrick, & Earl(no longer with us) & Co-owner of my first Ocean Boat 69 19' Searay was involved in a Boating accident on Oct 86, where they got lost in the Fog while trolling for Salmon just outside the Jaws of Tillamook Bay, Earl(Captain at the time) put the compas due East when the fog rolled in, & thought they were between the Jetties, when actually they were N. of the N. Jetty, he took them right into the pounding Surf(It was 8' + Swell that day, with no wind) All made it to Shore except Zeke(6 yrs old at the time), The Coast Guard(Thanks Guy's) rescued him 45 min later, as he was trapped in the Bow, his Brother(10 yrs old at the time) was also trapped for a short time but managed to escape, leaving his little brother to fend for himself, Zeke's core body temperature was 89 deg, he is lucky to be here today, they rushed him to the Hospital while warming him, & he made a full recovery(Altho some question that ) Charlotte, & Zeke managed to over come their fear & continued to go out in the Ocean, but Patrick still hasn't got enough courage to try again. This was the only time I wasn't in that Boat. Fog is a very dangerous weather condition, & should always be taked seriously.

Re: got fog??
i certainly agree on the radar. in addition, it is hard to pick your spot to run in on when you cant see the sets....assuming that there are any, and that adds to the excitement too
retaliate: sorry to hear that people close to you had to have that experience. I was fishing in the bay on that day and remember the humble feeling that all the fishermen were feeling on that day. i have seen the coast guard towing in boats upside down on numerous occassions typically reltated to fog, inexperience and even the incidental rogue wave.

Re: got fog??
As valuable as a Radar is, a good chart plotter can be as much so. Coming into Depoe Bay, on the Radar the hole is too small to actually see it. With my chart plotter, it will run me directly up the middle of the channel and in mid-hole without even looking out the windows.
Personally, I like having all of the above.
