Sunday Gator/Springer Report
Well,
Did the combo trip again today with good friends Boedy & Spooled...
Very slow by most standards (Maybe a dozen sturgeon total)...We fished several spots in the channel as well as the Columbia...Smelt took them all with various scent products like sturgeon feast, Mikes Lunker Sturgeon, Ainse to name a few...
Springers were very slow in the St Helens area but we had a feeling the smelt or something was around by the size of the seals we saw out there
Tried some of those great new quickies but not a bite... Boedy did get into a nice keeper size gator twords the end of the day however...
Oh by the way...just a reminder that sturgeon is closed to retention on Sunday - Wednesday...Unfortunately for one boat today, they found out the hard way...It is good to know that when you call the poacher hotline...they will respond and how...The only keepers kept today were by OSP thanks to some observant Ifishers and the PoacherHotLine Phone Number that is on each person's liscence
I don't know if those people realized it was closed to retention but when we got the word from another observant Ifisher on the radio and our quick thinking with the phone number, these individuals had a bad end to their day...

Good job KHH, sometimes a lesson has to be learned the hard way.

Re: Sunday Gator/Springer Report
Holding up a nate springer is not against the law. Is it? The regs state " .....SHOULD not be removed from the water." Not MUST not be removed. I am not saying people should be doing this, but for those that do, it is not against the law. Not yet........

Re: Sunday Gator/Springer Report
Zaq-
New as of last Thursday in OC. Put into action by both states, for the big "C".
Here's the rule proposed by the TAC, and accepted by the Joint Staff.
"For the mainstem Columbia River salmon and steelhead fishery upstream of the Rocky Point/Tongue Point line effective February 16 to May 15 :It is unlawful to totally remove from the water any salmon or steelhead required to be released."
Their emphasis was on the word totally. They also understood the need for a net in some situations, they(like the rest of us) would like to see minimal handling of those fish heading upriver.
Hope this helps.
Chris

Re: Sunday Gator/Springer Report
I can see a low gunnel is going to be handy. At least for those that can actually catch a Springer.
