Oregon Waterfowl Festival Decoy Carving Contest
What: Decoy carving contest held at the Oregon Waterfowl festival.
When: Saturday, August 18 (the festival runs on both the 18th and 19th).
Why: Because decoys are fun!
Where: Oregon Waterfowl Festival near Woodburn, Oregon.
How: Mail-ins and walk-ins accepted.
I'd like to let you all know about the decoy carving contest at the Oregon Waterfowl Festival this year. It differs from years past in that we will be accepting all species instead of just one.
I'm really excited about this years contest. We've changed quite a bit for the contest this year.
One thing I'd like to point out is that we will ship your decoys back to you on our dime. You just need to get the decoys to us, and will take care of the rest. Or, of course, you can enter your decoys Saturday at the festival.
I'm really hoping you will enter. If you've never entered a contest before or if you are a seasoned pro, please consider entering a decoy or 3 or 10 or whatever you want.
Details can be found here:
http://www.oregonwaterfowl.com/joomla/index.php?option=...view&id=25&Itemid=38
The rules and the entry form are included on that page.
The fee is $10.00 for your first decoy, $5.00 for each decoy after that up to a maximum of $20.00.
Hope to see your decoy there?
If you have any question, just let me know.
Geoff

Re: Oregon Waterfowl Festival Decoy Carving Contest
I started this carving about 2 years ago, Let it sit, started to sand it again, hollowed out the spaces in channesl up to the eye, Wondered if I should finish her or not?
Alex is still thinking it over ...
It would pale in comparison to hank or howard.

Re: Oregon Waterfowl Festival Decoy Carving Contest
This year we will not be having a kids division. There's no reason why your kid couldn't enter anyway. I don't expect a ton of entries (like other IWCA events) and it would be a good time and experience. If your kid would like to enter, I can see about waving the entry fees. Just let me know.

Official Oregon Waterfowl Festival Thread...
I know there have been several threads on the Oregon Waterfowl Festival, coming up August 18 and 19 at Mitchell's Sporting Clays in Gervais. Here is the spot to ask questions and get information from those volunteer's helping to coordinate this year's event.
Attached is the Festival Flyer, which can be printed off and used as a $2 off coupon for admission. (I know the flyer states to get it off the website, but it was covered up by another picture.) It also has a map to Mitchell's just in case you get lost on the way!
Please PM "NW Pest" (ifish moniker) for any questions you may have. Marshbum, Fleece and other's can also help answer questions.
Come on out and bring the kids. It's a great time and fun way to get youngster's interested in waterfowl.

Re: Official Oregon Waterfowl Festival Thread...
I'd also like to see who's planning on camping so I can see who I need to look out for
I know I'll be there Saturday night, but I'm not decided on Friday night yet.
Also, if you would like to help out in any way, let one of us know. Specifically, I'd love to have a few more volunteers for the decoy carving contest. This is a great way to be involved with out having to spend hours and hours working on the festival. I think 4 hours will get you in free, plus you get to meet a few people and see what goes on behind the scenes.

Did I see correctly that everyones' beloved waterfowl TV host, Craig Foster from Flyway Highway is going to be there? Now is the time for all you vocal internetters to let Craig know personally what a goober you all think he is.

I'll be there Friday afternoon for a bit and then be there from Saturday lunchish through closing on Sunday. I guess I'll have to come by the Delta booth and let Brian talk me into joining. But you might have to come and look at the boats, Brian!

Re: Kids Activities at the Oregon Waterfowl Festival
www.Oregonwaterfowl.com
Coming this year to the Oregon Waterfowl Festival will be a number of NEW events aimed at the young people in our lives. Children and teens are the future of our sport, why not introduce them to waterfowling at this year's festival. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to share the rich heritage of waterfowling with the young people in your life!
Decoy Painting
A favorite activity for kids of all ages is the decoy-painting booth. At the booth, would be artists will be provided with everything needed to paint a duck decoy, just the way they want it! Color safe, water-soluble paints are provided. At the end of the day, youngsters can return to pick up their decoys, dry and ready for the ride home!
The Duck Identification Challenge
This fully interactive race will be a scheduled event during the festival. Participants in the race will be timed as they attempt to match the names of various species of ducks with corresponding decoys. Now is the time to brush up on duck identification and get ready for a fun-filled challenge!
Duck Distance Judging Challenge
"How far is that duck?" is a new event for the kids that'll have the parents playing along. Bring your child by, and let them guess the distance of each ballon floating above.
The Duck Call Identification Challenge
Bring the kids by and see if they know their duck sounds. There are a lot of sounds for the kids to learn so not only will it be fun, it will be a learning experience.
Kidville
Bring your children to "Kidville" during the festival and join in the on-going kid events... DECOY PAINTING has become one of our time honored traditions of our show. Let your little ones dabble in the arts... and take home a treasure (to add to your decoy spread - ha ha)... 3-D DUCK CUT OUTS will give your little guys and gals a chance to build a duck of their choosing (mallard, widgeon, pintail, wood duck) from beautifully colored gloss board cut-outs..
will be a learning experience.
Photo Ops
There will be a PHOTO BOOTH to take pictures (polaroid) of your kids after they dress-up in "duck hunting duds". There will be sets of childrens camouflage clothing to wear and a cool "pop-gun" for the kids to hold in a duck blind for their picture. Then they will make their own "Popsicle Picture Frame" to make this a memorable treasure (for the Moms to keep). And be ready when the "OREGON DUCK MASCOT" or the "SMOKEY THE BEAR MASCOT" does a walkabout during the show. Plenty of wonderful dogs to pet (with owners permission) too. Or you might try to catch the action as kids take their turns playing on some of the kidville's big carnival style JUMPY CASTLE!!
The WADER RACES will be scheduled at intervals during the festival - look for the times in the festival program. Or guide your youth through the sporting clays course (JUNIOR SHOTGUN TOURNAMENT- sponsored by Dan Mitchell's - 50 birds for $5) available ages 10 - 17. Or for the wee ones... how about a chance to shoot at some cool targets with the new-time favorite NERF GUN...
And yes there will be hot-dogs, ice-cream, sno-cones and cotton candy....
Mascots
The University of Oregon's Duck Mascot along with Smokey the bear will be visiting the festival.

Re: Official Oregon Waterfowl Festival Thread...
PS: I should mention we are still in need of any old waders, kids sizes or adult, and any old kids camo for the photo booth.
We can also use any old decoys you may have, we are expecting a LOT of kids this year and last year we ran out of decoys to paint. They vcan be gunners and have a few holes, I will be shooting them w/ primer so they need not look very good....just clean if you could.
You may email me ( Mike.W.Knifong@tek.com) and my pager # is in my profile.
Many, many thanks in advance.

Re: Official Oregon Waterfowl Festival Thread...
Mike,
On your other thread I posted up that I would pitch in $40.00 to buy hotbuys and have asked folks to PM me letting me know if they want to pitch in some cash too. Next week I will go to the store and buy them and folks can settle up with me later. Chancellor has pitched in $20.00 already .
So we have at least 3 dozen for you by next weekend! Ok boys, let me know if you can spare $20.00 for the kids so we can get decoys for them to paint!

Glad to see everyone getting fired up! This years event should be great and it certainly looks like the kids may be having the most fun. Spread the word to all the people you know and help them understand why waterfowl and watefowling are so exciting.

Who's going to shoot the OWF Clays Tourney?
With a little encouragement Dan is going to hold an informal "Lewis" style clays tourney at the festival.
No purse, other than bragging rights and a few small prizes.
Cost: $25/50 clays (if I recall correctly)
If you recall many of us shot a half round of clays in small groups.
This is basically the same deal only he'll keep track of scores.
Should prove to be even more fun than last year.
Now if I can only con "QuackAttack" into letting me shoot his Franchi again this year.

Re: Official Oregon Waterfowl Festival Thread...
Duck Boat and Blind Contest
Bring your boats and blinds, both boat blinds and ground blinds. We can all compare designs and brag about our boats. The web site will be updated to a Sunday or late Saturday judge deadline. Currently the web site shows 10AM Saturday deadline for entrys. It will be moved out to allow everyone time to arrive and get set up.
To sweeten the pot there will be real prizes this year, custom duck calls, new duck and goose decoys, shotgun shells, maybe more. The prize list and donations are still growing.
See you there!

Re: Official Oregon Waterfowl Festival Thread...
Well I kinda hit the jack pot so to speak. Browns landing has changed hands and the new owner wants all the hunting stuff that the old owner had gone so here is your chance to come but and get some bargins on stuff. Tons of elk calls, deer calls and video's Camo clothing for the wee ones and for the ladies. Also some hip waders and tons of other stuff. There are a few blinds layout style, Dog ramps for boats, rain gear, jackets, Bib coveralls, boat blinds and so on. Every item purchased 25% goes to the ducks thru Delta. they are also donating a Avery boat Blind 18 to 20' to the raffle. So come on over to the Delta Booth and look at what Browns landing has to offer. Their loss is your gain.
Also the dog events are shaping up to be great. We currently have over 30 entry's and have room for more.
WC starts at 9 AM over by the pond.
Fastest water retrieve starts at 1 pm followed by the fastest double on land all over by the pond.
9am on Sunday has us right back at the fastest water and land retrieve's.
After we are done with the sanctioned events come on over to the pond with your dog for a little preseason warm up. You can either buy fresh birds to use or use the ones that we used in the morning.
Birds available at the festival will be chucker and ducks.
Its gonna be a blast. Remember it will take all of us working together to keep Swamp puppy out of trouble.
I'll be camping starting Friday till Sunday

Schedule of seminars & events, and map of grounds
Attached is a PDF file of the last version of program of events (calling times, seminars, dog & kids events) and map of grounds.
Do not consider this the "offical" copy....just the last copy I have.
Hope you find it useful. We will be handing them out as you enter as well.

Re: Official Oregon Waterfowl Festival Thread...
Hey, My wife, daughter and I would like to attend the BBQ on Saturday night. How does one get invited to this event and how do I get extra tickets for my wife and daughter?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Official Oregon Waterfowl Festival Thread...
Does anyone know the process I need to go through to enter a layout boat into the boat blind contest? Who is in charge of the entry of boats at the show? I saw that entries must entered by 9:30 but the website does not say where to enter. Can anyone help?
Thanks
Jason (aka Harry)

Bummed that I won't be making it this year. You boys be sure to miss a clay or two for me
On the up side, duck season starts in two weeks! If only I were ready for it.
