Default Great day on the Ocean!

I haven't had many fishing opportunities as of late, with the new boat arrivng next week, the rod company being as busy as it has ever been my son's little league, spending weekends at the lake etc. I haven't fishied at all.
But Saturday morning I was able to run out of Charleston and do some salmon fishing.
What a day...
we had 25+ take downs, 17 fish actually on and 9 in the net, keeping 7. (3 chinook 12#, 16#, 21# and 4 coho between 8-12#'s)
and we were back in by 11am.
2-4ft swells, no winds, what a wonderful day out on ole big blue.
Just had to share..
fishing 30ft of water, 2-4oz lead, cut herring, anchovies/hoochies, blue seemed to be the hot color of the day.
we also saw lots of people trolling the apex plugs, however we did not.
The only bad part was that i got sick.. I never get sick, and these were the best conditions I have been out in in years!
But well worth the drive heaves!

Sounds like a great trip, wish I was there. You've got to be happy landing 3 chinook and those silvers, really some good size to those fish.

How is the Charleston harbor and bar conditions? I've never fished from this port and interested in ramps and conditions.

Thanks,

hook

Charleston is a piece of cake. I am not a big ocean fisherman, and am very conseritive when it comes to the days I will go out, but I enjoy fishing out of Coos Bay.

Great launch, great bar and harbor, and good fishing!

If you do fish out of Charleston, watch out for the silted in commercial crab pots, they are very dangerous and will destroy a downrigger in seconds.

Sounds like a safe place to fish. I'll have to check it out and give it a try or maybe Winchester, a little closer. Sounds like the salmon fishing in both areas is going great.

Thanks,

hook

Way to go Travis! Why didn't you hit simpson reef on the way back in for some toothy critters?
Hookset - Charleston's bar and harbor are great. The bar is most often softer than that of Windy bay to the north and the harbor facilities are primo.

Fished out of Tillamook on Sat, fish were a little scattered. The fin clipped silvers small at 6-8 lbs, natives larger, we got 1 chinook about 23lbs. Nice ocean conditions till the wind came up in the afternoon.
