That is funny and I don't care who you are I am sure the dogs who use the charking station in DBay appreciate your efforts, but no, I don't know how to get the stink out.

Re: Stink!!!
Just put them in a bag and when its clean the fish cleaning station time - change into them in the restroom, do your thing and then change out of them - or maybe we can get a donation together to get you a set of pibs, and rain coat so you can put on your (cough cough) fully body "protection"!
Thanks for your hard work - that has got to be a dirty job - hit up Mike Roe of Dirt Jobs and see if he will come clean the station and garbage bins and dump truck with you for a day

Since you've already got the "tuna clothes," why don't you come fishing with me? It would be fun to get you on the other side of the equation.
Seriously.

Re: Stink!!!
Try adding about a pint of white vinegar to your wash water. It's also great for removing fish and onion odor from hands. Just wash hands with soap, splash on vinegar and scrub, wash again with soap.

My wife went thru a gallon of viniger trying to clean the stink from my cloths before giving up.
TUNA CLOTHS ARE FOREVER
Maybe sent block like we use for Archery cloths cleaning, but that would get expensive. Rubber suit is best.

Re: Stink!!!
I've got a container of sportwash I'd be happy to send you. I don't know if it will get all the stink out, but it's worth a try. It's supposed to remove all odors and blood - but I don't know if it was tested on fish stank. PM me your address and I'll get it in the mail.
Thanks for keeping the fish cleaning stations clean.
ETA: I'm washing my stinky tuna clothes from Friday now, along with the towels and stuff from carking, so I'll report on the results.

Re: Stink!!!
Well, I'm no tuna fisherman, but I have cleaned a fair amount of tuna, including a literal "boatload" for a buddy in early July-still wondering how I got talked into that one. I thought there was no hope for the clothes I was wearing. They still stunk after the first wash. Then I remembered a tip I read on here for using GOJO cleaner for coolers, so I though I would try it on my clothes. A few days ago I squrited a bunch on the clothes, but it in the washer with regular laundry detergent, washed it on hot and they came out great. In fact I wore the jeans to work today and nobody complained, so it must have worked.

Re: Stink!!!
Store the TUNA clothes in a plastic bag and only wear them when dealing with TUNA
DO NOT wash them and put them in the dresser with your non TUNA clothes or you will have a lot of stinky clothes DON'T ASK
The up side is in the off season you can get a little fix by opening the bag and taking a wiff
That will get you daydreaming of the upcoming season and help with the jones'
You can also wear them to the TA meetings
the smell may offend your waitress but the Dogs will not even notice

Re: Stink!!!
Dirty in Depoe,
The best stuff I've found is Arm & Hammer Laundry Detergent.
If you put them in the wash as soon as you get home they usually come out good the 1st time. I use a water fill level one size bigger than the load and always use the maximum amount of detergent suggested on the box. I usually start the wash cycle for about 5 mins then stop and let it soak for 20 mins, then continue.
If you wait until the next day you will need to wash them 2-3 times to get the stink out.

Re: Stink!!!
I was taken out by Kenai this weekend for my first tuna venture and of course am now hooked ... left the rubber bibs and boots in the bed of the trunk, removed the clothes and put them in 5 gallon bucket with detergent to soak ... but what I didn't expect is the smell from my leatherman. We were improvising and using it as a head spike, I thought I had washed it off good, even gave it a soak in hot water ... my wife came down and said, good lord what stinks ... and we realized it was my leatherman, and my wife wanted to know what kind of fishing I was doing that would make metal stink ...
I'm taking the advise of friends, going to Goodwill and spending $10 on pants, shirt and whatever, they'll go in the trash end of season.

Re: Stink!!!
I just take one of my tuna coolers add a cup or so of bleach put a few gallons of water and soak them after soaking just throw them in the washer. The remaining bleach in the cooler works great for cleaning the cooler.

I wash mine with good ol' borax. Also I repeat the process again after the final rinse. then dry and for the most part it's gone. if not I repeat.
borax is some GREAT stuff with lots of different uses.

Don't ever get rid of the "tuna clothes"!!!
They live in the garage and you put them on as you leave the house for fishing. I have a number of garments that fall under that category.

Re: Stink!!!
Does nobody have a washdown pump or wear bibs? I understand I've got limited experience with the tuna thing, but with bibs and rubber boots, my clothes are as fresh as they were before I left, almost. Short of a couple non completely spiked tuna in the bucket throwing blood in 20 feet each direction, there's usually relatively little blood around.
Maybe you guys are in some kind of competition with everyone else here and on Youtube, trying your hardest to get your boat/clothes/self bloodier than anyone else

Re: Stink!!!
I'm currently trying to work out a washdown pump dilema. I actually prefer that my deck stay a lot cleaner than that. But sometimes, even with a functional washdown, mahem ensues and the read pauint flies....especially when you have three to five fish on deck with the pre-spike jitters.

Nice offer Skein. Some good ideas. Maybe pitch in and get the guy a good set of rain gear to wear. Reading all you guys reports, I can imagine those dumpsters are full and reeking. Some day I have to try for them things. Living over here in Eastern Oregon makes it a little harder.

Update - sports-wash no workie.
Tuna clothes are in the wash again with baking soda, tea tree oil, and I put some of my detergent for removing oil from fabric in for good measure.

I tried an old trick once to get jet fuel smell out of my clothing and it worked great. Coco-Cola. Not sure if it works for tuna clothes, but it sure won't hurt to try.

i use my tuna clothes when i get home to pick up the dog bombs instead of a bag. then i put them in the garbage can. seems to work real well getting the stink out of them. i also tried 4 days of soaking in a 5 gal bucket with simple green which didn't work.

My wife also complained about the smell in both the cooler and on the clothes. I washed the cooler using some orange cleaner from Zeppo and soaked the tuna clothes in some also. She hasn't complained since so it must have worked!

Re: Stink!!!
I just left a cooler of carks with a coworker. You should have seen the look he gave me when I asked for one more sniff before he took them away. It's a good thing he didn't notice the tear forming in the corner of my eye when he walked away with them.

No need to stink. A pair of xtratufs and a set of x-trappers will keep you clean and dry, and set you back alot less than that machined aluminum reel you are pining for. You can go cheap and wear PVC garden boots and 20 dollar bibs too, but your feet will hurt and the bibs will have to be replaced yearly.

I save a few gills and leave them in the pockets when I wash mine.

Use lemon juice. I use it on all my tuna cloths and boots. If they really bad, place them in a bucket and soak them over night then wash then with a good laundry soap. It works everytime for me.

Re: Stink!!!
Dunno guys. When I don my tuna clothes I feel sorta like I'm in uniform, like I'm ready to make something happen. You know, blood stains that will never come out, frayed elbows and cuffs, jeans with enough holes in 'em to make a hobo happy. And the aroma lets me remember the times I've been to the edge and back, bloodied but unbowed. Sure, I've got bibs and tuff's, but my tuna clothes are still, well, special.

Someone here posted "Tuna clothes are forever" & I believe it. There used to be BIZ for soaking clothes & it actually worked but the high phosphate content caused it's demise in the grocery store. There may be a substitute but I doubt it works as well.

Mattpark your right most people after awhile decided Bibs and Boots are the way to go, a good wash down pump, but after a couple trips and good cleaning in between my Bibs are so slick I can hardly catch them and even soaking them dosen't completly get rid of the oder, but to go Bare back per say with street cloths on is a little hard core. My grandson did it last trip and learn a lesson, lots of luck on the cloths guys, I have a couple shirts that are forever, I did try using that stuff "Awsome" or something like that from the dollar store, whole bottle in the load and it did a pretty good job.........................Just enjoy the day - leave the cloths in the garage..................Ray

Bibs are for sissies
Rain gear is too
A real man wears TUNA Clothes till they fall apart
A big part of the fishing experience is to be tough enough to take what nature dishes out and to not whine about it
I tried the knee high boots and rubber suits and by the end of a trip I stank worse from sweating that any fish can stink and I was wetter than if it had rained and I was naked
No Bibs for me bring on the blood, slime and rain
I can take it

Re: Stink!!!
Yep, raingear kept me relatively clean on the boat and the washdown pump was integral in keeping the boat clean too. Another point to mention, when using a gaff the fish do the hard core wiggle on the deck and throw blood everywhere. We netted all our fish, never lost one doing it and they almost all laid calmly in the net waiting patiently to be brain spiked with our red pliers. They didn't start bleeding until we TOLD them to start bleeding, in the bleed bucket!!
