Default Fresh smelt and sturgeon C&R

Took Pop's and the Boys Fishing today after church. launched out of Fred's and met a guy with a springer in the box. Anyways, we zipped out into the Willy and only went down river about a 1/4 mile or so and dropped the hook.

Nothing like fresh smelt to attract big fat fish. I hit one keeper that we estimated around 49 inches, Pop's hit two keeps that were high 40's and Shaggy hit a nice barely legal keeper. My little guy Daylin did'nt hit a keeper but he had a blast reeling in a few shakers and using a tooth brush to wash the motor handle.

Nice afternoon except for a brief wind gust or two for 20 minutes. We never moved all afternoon and kept busy enough to keep us interested. Who needs the channel when the Willy produces just fine.

Wife and I fished on the big river well below KP. The bite was not hot, but was consistent if you were patient with the bites. Had about 25 shakers, with the largest around 40", one 42"-plus and one real nice 50"-plus. Nobody around us most of the day. I used fresh Cowlitz River smelt and she stuck with her squid. Like I say, lots of bites but you had to wait them out for a good grab. It was enough action, that kept us from switching over to look for springers, and besides, had a bag of fresh smelt to use up.

Picked up the smelt yesterday above Longview. Had to move three times but finally found some good quantities in close for some decent dipping. It was pretty tough going at most of the usual spots in town.

Now after seeing the weather forcast for this next week, the Springer juices are really starting to flow! Kwikies on sale at Joe's.

Ya Terry, we stole Tacklebuster and your spot. 62 ft of watering hole for some very nice fish. I think we only caught 2 sub 30 fish all day the rest were 30 plus. Like I said, we only fished from 1:30 to 5pm and it was very enjoyable. Much better than watching the Jail Blazers on on the Boob Tube.

It was real nice there for awhile but I guess we stood up a bit to often for others up and down stream. Within a half an hour we had 5 boats all around us. Funny thing was only one of them did any good at all besides us and their performance was less than stellar. Had one boat above us fishing in our anchor rope when the wind started to blow. Did use the kicker for about 20 minutes when the wind swung us out of our slot. Hope I did'nt tick anyone off by trying to keep my boat straight and over the slot.
