Re: east side si question
when the bird regs come out in a couple of weeks the application dates/deadlines will be in the back. each period has a different application time/deadline..so you don't have to put in for the entire season all at once. just a couple at a time

Re: east side si question
You get 5 choices per Application/Period.
So you can choose 1 date and 5 different units, or mix up your dates and chose the same unit, or mix them all up and chose different dates/units.
Typically most hunters will probably find it only practical to hunt or apply for 3 or 4 hunt days during any one hunt period (they're only about 2 weeks long per period).
My experience has been you seldom ever get drawn for any hunts below your 2nd choice.
With more hunters applying for weekend dates, those are a little harder to get than weekdays.
The Applications get submitted ~1 month in advance of the first hunt date in any period, so it helps to know the trends of the different units.
Some won't even be huntable (although they'll be available to apply for) at the beginning of the season. There won't be any or adequate water to attract the birds in some. So it really helps to have an idea of what areas are huntable from the start.
Then, after the season gets going, certain units "turn on". Again, nothing's a certainty and some units with identical features that are "hot" one year, may not be the next year. And this even changes from day to day.
At best, with the application dates as far out as they are, things are somewhat of a "crap shoot" in many cases.

Re: east side si question
i don't put in for a lot of eastside hunts..i usually hunt the westside when i do go out there. i put in for a few a year though.
it seems to me that you get like 5 or 6 choices per period. the day and the unit each have a specific code. it works sort of like a controlled big game hunt where you have a 1st through 6th (for example) choice. you stand a decent chance of getting one of the choices..or maybe two..or maybe none, in each period.
there are a few SI east siders on here that know the process better than i do. or, you can look up the 06/07 regs and look at the layout for the application. maybe that will help.

Re: east side si question
First off, you only get one hunt per period (approx. 2weeks). It is like big game where you have 1st through 5th choice(for each period). My experience is that you very rarely draw anything past third choice unless it is a "roam" unit. In the beginning of the season, all you will have to make your decision is past historic numbers. You can get those numbers from ODFW website. First go to their Home page ,then Hunting resources, then waterfowl and then click on Sauvies Island Wildlife area.
If you draw a blind unit you are allowed a total of 4 hunters including yourself. If you draw a roam unit it is for you only, your buddy(s) have to draw it for themselves or sit in the sweat line and hope there is a slot left. Hope that helps.

That is correct (I guess I didn't make it clear that you can put in for 5 choices, different dates, units or both during the same period, but you only get drawn once, IF you get drawn).
On the 2nd item there, hunting buddies CAN go in and get drawn to hunt Roam units together. They put in as "Parties", just like with big game. Their Applications are identical and they can apply with a "Party Leader" and up to 4 persons can make up a Party to hunt in a Roam Unit.

Yep, your right you could waste all 4 guys' one hunt(per period) in a party draw for a roam. The other, more reasonable option, would be for all four people to put in seperately for blind units and actually have four chances instead of one "party" chance at a roam unit. I guess a person can use their chance per period anyway they choose but I like the idea of 4 chances rather than one.

Yeah, but there are places, even Roam Units, that may be "worth it" as far as hunting success goes, to just snag and hunt 1 time in a period for some hunting buddies to get together and hunt.
I was just expounding on "how" the hunts could be applied for.
The stategies of how/why is another topic.
I.e. would you rather hunt 1 GREAT hunt in a period in a Roam Unit that's "Super Hot", or hunt 2, 3, or maybe even 4 hunts in Blind Units that are only doing "so-so"?

 That only depends upon the unit you draw...some you can roll in much later.
