Fisherman's & Kwik Fish
Stopped in a Fisherman's Saturday evening just before closing to look around. I noticed the racks were full of the new Kwick Fish. So, being the tackle junkie that I am, I had to buy five of those new babies. One of the Pink with chartruse spots, two of the blue with spots and two of the deep green with the chartruse spots. I got home and started giving them some love affection they needed by replacing the stock hooks with bead chains and owners. They looked sooo good that I decided to go back and get a couple more today. I was surprised to see that all the K-15's have been cleaned out. So were the K-14's. Wow. It must have been mayham in there today. The new colors are just about gone. I really think the new colors are going to work great. Time will tell. Tuesday at the mouth of the Clack will be a good tester.

Re: Fisherman's & Kwik Fish
May I ask how long you are making that chain? I'm doing the same thing with the ones I bought at the show but, being new to PNW salmon fishing, I'm not sure I'm doing this right.

Re: Fisherman's & Kwik Fish
First I remove the bottom treble hook and discard it. I then use a snap ring between the upper attachment on the Kwick fish and the four bead chain. Then put a snap ring on the treble hook and connect it to the bead chain. I don't use a hook on the tail of the Kwick Fish. It works alot better now. I don't miss as many fish this way.

Re: Fisherman's & Kwik Fish
Spacefish, are you putting a small corkie, size 8, either on the bead chain or the hook shank. STS mag says that it works for him to keep the hook in the strike zone.

Re: Fisherman's & Kwik Fish
I think the tuning of the Kwikfish makes more of an impact than the color.

Space fish:
When I was at the sportsman's show, there was a guide that swore by the method you have just described. He said that he hooks them in the throat every time. I was wondering though with that hook hanging so far back, what happen's when you catch a Native, is it going to be difficult to get the hook out without removing the fish from the water? While also at the show I talked to The Gami rep. He showed me their new A510 single point hooks and stated that they had tremendous success with these hooks on the Kenai. Plus much easier to remove from a Nate.

Re: Fisherman's & Kwik Fish
I don't use any corkies to elevate the hook into the zone. With the hook on a 4 bead chain it fishes in between the tail hook area the the belly hook area.
I haven't had a problem releasing fish caught this way. The hook is not right in the lip any more. It's just inside the mouth in the softer tissue area. Nothing in the throat or gills. I miss alot less fish now than I used to. I would stick with the four bead chain instead of the six bead though. The six bead will have more weight which would require some type of floation for the hook. Also there could be the concern of hooking the fish too deep.
I tend to think as ZaQ does that a properly tuned Fish will work no matter the color. I also believe that some days color does matter and you catch more fish using the correct color for that day. Last year for fall Nook the goto color was the blue spot on the Alvins. I saw lots of people hooking up with the blue spot and everyone else wishing they had one.
I have to confess again that I am a tackle junkie and can't help myself. I don't have every color or size. Just the usual goto colors. The best I've found is the chartruse bill on the silver body or chartruse on both the bill and tail. I just had to have a couple of the new colors this year. They looked real fishy to me.

SpaceFish,
Is a "snap" ring the same as a "split" ring???

Re: Fisherman's & Kwik Fish
Fish-Addict: I got a few of the Assist 510s at the Sportsman's Show last year and used them for the tail hook. I liked the setup, but I couldn't find any more of them until recently. Bob's in Longview carries them now, but they are in the saltwater jigging section. I bought a couple more packs last week. I think I will try dropping the belly hook on a barrel swivel so that it doesn't get far enough back to interfere with the tail hook. Hopefully this will create the ultimate springer killin' setup!

Re: Fisherman's & Kwik Fish
I absolutely ADORED the pink K 13!!! But, the only time I was able to shop was before they opened, and they wouldn't hold it for me. :depressed:
Bummage. I hope I find one. They are KILLER on silvers, too!

Re: Fisherman's & Kwik Fish
Sorry, I was in a hurry this morning and some how snap ring is what came out. It should say "split" ring. Thankyou.
Follow Fish-Addict's picture. It would look the same as mine. The only difference is I use smaller split rings & Owner hooks.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Did you get the name of the Gamakatsu rep who did the "field trials" on the Kenai? I'd really like to talk to him.
I am very interested in this hook and how it is best rigged on a KwikFish as "one single-point hook" as per regulations.

Re: Fisherman's & Kwik Fish
Fishaddict, very nice pic of your custom-rigged Kwikies.
On what appears to be the K15's, are those Owner 1/0's?

Re: Fisherman's & Kwik Fish
No they are just stock hooks. I only put owners on after the stock one's have been mangled.
