Default Friday - Tuna Depoe Bay

Took my mother, and 2 of my brothers kids out for a few Tuna this morning. None of them had ever fished in the ocean so it was a totally new experience for all of them.

Had a great time, we pulled the gear with 8 Tuna in the box, and came inside for chasing the Salmon around. Ended up kicking loose 4 or 5 natives, a few drive-by take downs, and a couple of other fish lost, ending the day with 1 Chinook in the boat, (My nephews first salmon), and the 8 Tuna. Nephew lost another Chinook right at the boat.

All in all, was a good time by them, which was the idea behind the trip.

Now, numbers:
First Tuna in the boat at 124.14 (yes, inside of 10 miles), scratched up a few more singles as we moved out a little. Got as far as about 124.25 or so before turning around.

Salmon were right around the 240' level, mostly scratch fishing, but hitting anything we had on the line.

By the way, more fish in better numbers were caught up around 45.03/124.30's from what I've been hearing by charter skippers and on the radio.

Sea-J (Nalu) came in at 38
Siam-Eze - came in at 56
Endevour - came in at 74

Sounds like most of these were up further north around the above numbers.

Thanks Nancy. I'm headed out tomorrow so this helps plan where the carnage will take place.

We scratched up 10, which was what we set out for, and my wingman also got 10. Several doubles, although we lost two of them. There was NOTHING to make us think tuna were there however, no birds, no slick, no debris, just a gut feeling and a desire to get the lines wet.

We started up by the 61 spot and finally moved about 5 miles further to finish the day. Thanks, Maverick for the tip-off, and Ron M for the trolling speed; about 5 mph.

Purple and black were our best colors but we got bit on Zucchini and Mexican Flag.

We did get one hookup on the flyrod, but lost him pretty quickly. I don't think he was hooked well at all. Fun though, at least for a moment.

Pretty grim out there. The only breeze was when the boat was moving, and the swell was about like a cheap pool table.

Goin' tomorrow and prolly Sunday.

Nancy, thanks for the post.

We ended up with 22 tuna after getting about a 12 foot thresher shark to the boat. It took us 1-1/2 hours to finally get it in. We clipped the line at the boat and estimated that it weighed approx. 400 pounds. It sounded to 650 feet which was the depth of water where we hooked it. Took about an hour to get it to the surface. We didn't want to cut the line until we knew what it was. A friend took pictures, so hope I can get copies.

The best tuna fishing we had today was at 45 07 x 124 30. Nice blue water. The tip of the finger on the latest chlorophyll shot. We caught most of the fish on cedar plugs and lead spoons. Early in the day, close to the boat, full sun we had to go farther back.
