Default Large Lure tackle box

I hope I have the picture posting down for this post.

A while back I was asking about sturdy tackle boxes that I could hang my long lures in such as Kwikfish, Flatfish, Alvins, large spinnger, etc... I wasn't able to find what I wanted, so I made a prototype that was cheap, easy and works like a charm.

I started by going to G.I. Joes and buying a plain old boaters dry box. The inside measurements are 12" across, 9 1/2 inches tall, and 6" deep.

I then took 3/8" self adhesive weatherstripping tape and made "channels" inside so I could slide in 2 custom cut pieces of that plastic cardboard stuff that they use to make lawn signs out of.

As you can see, I can hang my longest Kwickfish, or any other long lure I use. It may not be the prettiest tackle box around, but it works great and I only have about $14 and a half hour of time into it. I can hang approximately 25 Alvins in it, who knows how many spinners, and at least as many Kwikfish, even the large K16's.

I dry them off, wrap the leader and good quality swivel into a small coil and hang them in the box. That way when I want to change lures in a hurry all I have to do is pull out the one I want to use and snap it on when my line is reeled in. 30 seconds and I'm fishing again.

I'm sure there are many changes that could be made to make this even better, but it works for me, and is just big enough to hold a good supply of lures but not take up too much space in the boat. I hope this helps somebody or at least gives tham an idea to improve upon.

Well, I can't get the pictures to show but the links work. No I don't have a patent yet! I just want to catch fish.

For some reason the [IMG] won't work for me. If a mod wants to fix it, thanks!

Hey Wheresmybobber, glad to help. Study the links and check out the [img] part. Here's an example of benevolent dictatorship.

Your images are almost there ... add after it, then hit refresh!

Those boxes are great! I put some aluminum dividers in one of the low sided ones and use it for my lead. Sturdy, easily carried and reasonably priced.

Look out Plano, someone has just built a better mouse trap (opps, I mean lure case). Get idea and thanks for posting. I'm going to build one for myself. Oh, you don't have a patent on this yet do you?

Nice box, it would solve some storage problems for me. Thanks for the nice post!

I did something similar for my weights. I took one of those heavy duty plastic tool trays (like the orange ones you use to shop at Fisherman's) and screwed some wood dividers into it and I keep all my lead in it. You need to get the heavy duty one because it weighs close to 50 lbs if you fill it up. I'll take a picture of it next time I'm on the boat for those who are interested. It fits nicely between the passenger air-ride and the bench behind it and costs about $5 to make. I got mine at (gasp) GI Joes. Motion Marine makes a real nice tackle locker that holds 3 plano boxes. It's a flush mount system and I mounted mine underneath one of my long bench seats. I love it - it holds almost all of my kwikfish and it's never in the way. Problem: it costs $80. One more idea - Boaters world sells a suction cup lure holder that you stick on the inside of your glass window (if you have them). It's made out of white plastic. They're $9.99 and it holds more than 20 sturgeon hooks with leaders (or mooching rigs) or about 7 K-14 kwikfish. It's really come in handy and everyone who has fished with me has gone out and got one.

Nice Job,
I also noticed you dont use the belly hook on your Kwikfish and you also push the tail hook back with a swivel nice ..

I've got a fishing log/chart you can print out, on my site at http://www.triflash.com
I've been using them for about ten years but it seems what worked last year doesn't work this year. Is great for the people that have crs (can't remember $#!%). Just go to print free stuff. I've a few tackle boxes called Maxi mate. Each one holds about 200 spoons. Same idea, they hang. Saw them in a tackle shop here in the east and cost about $55.

WMB - This looks like a project best undertaken in an election year -- better availability of the plastic cardboard stuff!

Hey, WheresMyBobber, great idea for lure storage! This is an example of how this website can shine!!

How many other great ideas do the members have out there?

Yes, KT, we would like to see your lead storage. I have mine in one big metal container and they are all mixed together. It isn't pretty.

Does anybody have a good idea for storing your net out of the way? We have a 20' sled with a roof.

Rubber - I installed an off-shore style rod holder - it's stainless steel and mounts flush with the gunnel at an angle. Works great for holding the net. It has a rubber stopper in the top that prevents water from getting in when the net isn't in it. You need to have at least 6" wide gunnels to put it in. Just drill an angled hole with a hole cutting drill bit and screw it in. I won't be on my boat for another 2 weeks (it's moored at the coast) but I'll get a pic of my weight box and post it then.
