Default Why go to Alaska?

Doggone it! Here it is the first of July coming up and salmon fishing just getting good and my wife drags me off to The Kenai for some Halibut and Salmon fishing. Some guys just never get a break. One of these days I'm going to stand up to that woman and tell her who is really in charge. I whined and protested and even tried to make up some phony client trips but she saw right through it. I figure I can get in four or five trips before the flight on the 5th and be back ready to go on the 16th of July. So you guys have fun down there at Astoria and I'll be thinking of you while I'm stuck in some underpowered Kenai sled waiting for the rod to slam to the water. Trust me, you will have more fish on than I will.
We just have to see what it's like up there when we don't have to work.

Well Capt.,

I'm NOT going to Alaska this summer. But,
I AM going up to fish the Columbia. With all the fish returning this year, it should rival anything up north has to offer...
...except maybe the halibut fishing!

You have a great trip (and Jen too). We expect a full report when you get back.

Don't you worry Capt., fishing the Kenai will be just like fishing fall chinooks in upper T-Bay or springers at Oregon City - boats every 20 ft. in every direction. So you will feel right at home. Almost the same thing with the Nush. I'm curious why more people don't go off to uncrowded wilderness rivers that are still pretty numerous up there? Will still be fun though. Good luck on the big feesh lottery.

It's too bad the trip couldn't have been planned for the middle of June. My wife and I returned on the 21st from our annual trip north. We fished the Kenai one day with a guide friend, and boated 4 kings to 45lbs. Like RT said, it is definitely NOT the wilderness experience, but the weather this year was exceptional, all 8 days that we were there. 75 degrees and sunny. I also fished the Kasilof quite a bit and caught and released more 1st run kings than we could count. We even managed to find a relatively uncrowded spot on the Russian for some reds if you can believe that. My favorite thing about Alaska in June, is no night. You can fish 24 hours a day if you want, and usually by about 10 pm the fishing's just heating up, and most of the people are calling it a day! Plus, you don't have to clean the boat! Sounds tough, but do you allow your wife to always get the biggest king also? Mine still does this "I got the biggest King dance"! (53 lbs) I got her beat on the Halibut unfortunately, on everyone of the three trips I have gotten the largest. Last year was a pair of 100 lbers. If I had gotten another I would have just cried. I know how you feel. I just hope you don't have to haul heaveybuckets of razors to the rig too.
